Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many large cites the growing population has created a serious shortages housing. Some people belive that constructing tall aparment buildings is the best way to solve this problem. I partly agree with this view beacause high rise buildings can accomodate many people however solutions are also necessary ti ensure afforadable and comfortable housing.

On the one hand , building tall apartment blocks is an effective way to make better use of limited land. In major cities, where land is expensive and available space is restricted, constructing high rise buildings allows more families to live in the same area. This can help reduce the housing shortages without expanding the city into surrounding rural areas, For example, in Dhaka apartment buildings provide accomodation for a large number of people who move to the city for education and employment. Therefore high rise housing can be practical solution to the increasing demand for homes.

On the other hand , I belive that relying entirely on tall buildings is not sufficients.Initially apartments in modern high rise buildings can be too expensive for low income families meaing that many people may still struggle to find affordable accommodation.Secondly concentrating a large population in a small area can put pressure on public services, including roads, hospitals, schools and water supplies. An alternative approach would be to develop smaller towns and suburban areas by improving public transport and creating more employment opportunities outside major cities. This would encourage people to live in less crowded areas while maintaing access to essential services.

In conclusion,in my opinion combining high rise construction with afforadable housing projects and the development of smaller towns would be a more effective and sustainable approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position throughout that acknowledges both the benefits and limitations of building tall apartment blocks. The ideas are generally well extended and supported, such as the example provided regarding Dhaka to illustrate how high-rise housing accommodates a growing urban population. However, some parts of the argument tend to over-generalise or remain slightly under-developed, particularly the brief mention of alternative solutions like developing smaller towns, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher descriptor level. Overall, the main arguments are relevant, well-structured, and directly answer the extent question posed in the task instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. Information and ideas are clearly linked, making the writer's stance easy to follow from the introduction to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct paragraphs for the introduction, the main body points, and the concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader, although referencing and linking could occasionally be smoother to fully achieve higher-level flexibility without mechanical elements.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'accommodate', 'infrastructure', and 'sustainable approach'. However, there are notable spelling errors and inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'cites' instead of 'cities', 'shortages housing' instead of 'housing shortages', 'aparment' instead of 'apartment', and 'afforadable' instead of 'affordable'. While these lexical errors occur throughout the text, they do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments without major difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, effectively utilizing multi-clause sentences to express reasoned arguments. There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing commas after introductory phrases (e.g., 'In many large cites'), spacing issues around punctuation marks, and occasional run-on structures. Despite these persistent errors, the grammar and punctuation control is generally adequate, and the mistakes rarely impede communication, reflecting a reliable intermediate level of grammatical accuracy.
