Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been considerable debate about how to provide shelter to everybody in big cities. Many people think that building tall apartment blocks is the best solution, while others hold different views. In my opinion, I agree with the idea that tall apartments should be build in popoulated cities so that everyone can have their own home.

The primary reason I support this view is that in modern cities people usually face difficulty in searching for a house. This is because in these cities most of the space has already been taken up by industries and businesses. Also, the population of large cities is continously increasing because more people move in these areas to find better educational and employment opportunities. Therefore, the demand for more space is evident. By building tall apartments, enough houses can be constructed.

Another significant reason is that these blocks can be designed according to the need and the desire of people. For example, students mostly move to another city alone and if the construction of tall building is near educational place, it can be designed as a single room apartment. Moreover, constructing a large number of houses is not possible near a construction area. Tall buldings take lesser space and accomodate many people. For example, most of the tall buildings in China has hundreds of houses.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that tall apartment blocks can provide enough homes in big cities. Moreover, it helps in accomodating more people in lesser space.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your essay addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position throughout that you agree with the statement. You provide relevant ideas to support your view, such as the scarcity of space in modern cities caused by businesses and the need to accommodate a growing population, which you mention in the second paragraph. However, some of your ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, when you mention that tall blocks can be designed according to people's needs, the supporting example about students moving to another city is somewhat brief and lacks depth. To reach the next level, you need to ensure that every main idea is thoroughly explored and supported with more detailed examples or explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a conclusion. You make use of standard cohesive devices to guide the reader, such as 'The primary reason', 'Also', 'Therefore', and 'Another significant reason'. However, the cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or formulaic, and referencing is not always entirely clear, as seen in the phrase 'these blocks' which relies heavily on general context rather than tight lexical chains. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct argument. To improve further, try to vary your cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that transitions between sentences flow seamlessly without relying on repetitive introductory phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'considerable debate', 'educational and employment opportunities', and 'accommodate'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout your text that prevent a higher score. For example, you misspelled 'populated' as 'popoulated', 'continously' instead of 'continually', 'buldings' instead of 'buildings', and 'accomodate' with a single 'm' in places. Furthermore, phrases like 'tall apartments should be build' show word form inaccuracies. These errors do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher band you need to exercise greater control over spelling and precise word choice while incorporating a wider variety of sophisticated vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You utilise a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. For instance, you wrote 'tall apartments should be build' instead of 'built', and in the final paragraph 'Moreover, it helps in accomodating' should use the plural pronoun 'they' to agree with 'tall apartment blocks'. Additionally, minor article errors appear, such as missing articles or incorrect singular/plural agreement like 'most of the tall buildings in China has' instead of 'have'. To move to a higher level, you should aim to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over subject-verb agreement and passive verb forms.
