Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, due to increasing pollution and highly crowded cities cause residence shortages, individual should decide what type of residence would be more suitable to overcome this problem. Some people believe that tall apartment blocks would be best way to provide enough homes in larger cities. Although tall apartments can cause inconbenience and concern, I agree that it will remain the best option for several reasons.

On the one hand, living in apartment offers a restricted space and inconvenience compared to single private houses. The conditions such as connection between all apartments and absence of private courtyards will result in less private and more noisy life. As a result, people who prefer soltitude and peaceful enviorment would choose single private houses. Moreover, the higher the apartment, the more dangerous it is in the case of natural disastera and unexpected accidents. Tall blocks are often vulnerable and the chance of successfully evacuating is low compared to single private homes.

On the other hand, single houses are less environmentally friendly and less effective way to provide a home for all people. Building small private homes will cover more space which will results in the reduced wildlife habitat, creating enviornmental problems. Large and crowded cities often lack a space for such houses and this option is often unavailable. In addition, as apartments are more affordable compared to single private homes, they will place less financial pressure on individuals to purchase a residence.

In my opinion, accurately planned and high quality tall apartments could create convenient environment while providing all people with enough homes. Building a large amounts of single private houses will demand more resouces and space, which is less adequate option.

In conclusion, I agree that the best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks, as preserving resouces is essential and high quality apartments will create a convenient and safe environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout, agreeing with the statement that tall apartment blocks are the best solution for providing enough homes in large cities. The length requirement is fully met. The main arguments are generally relevant and presented across body paragraphs, showing both sides of the issue before reaffirming the author's stance. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the point regarding natural disasters and evacuations in tall buildings is mentioned but not fully explored with specific supporting evidence. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure that all main ideas are thoroughly supported and extended with more detailed explanations or concrete examples rather than general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Each paragraph has a discernible central topic, such as the disadvantages of apartments in the second paragraph and their environmental and financial advantages in the third. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive, and paragraphing could be managed with even greater fluidity. To move up, the student needs to integrate cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that referencing between sentences is consistently clear and varied without relying on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the student's ideas regarding urban housing. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'wildlife habitat', 'financial pressure', and 'environmentally friendly'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('inconbenience', 'soltitude', 'enviorment', 'enviornmental', 'resouces') and minor word choice or form inaccuracies ('living in apartment' missing an article, 'less effective way', 'a large amounts'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on precision in word choice, accurate word forms, and careful proofreading to eliminate spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, showing an ability to form conditional and concessive clauses such as 'Although tall apartments can cause inconvenience...'. There are some grammatical errors present, particularly concerning article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'highly crowded cities cause residence shortages, individual should decide' and 'building small private homes will cover more space which will results in'. However, these errors do not impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles, plurals, and subject-verb agreement.
