Student answer (Band 5.5)

Deciding to build home in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks, I strongely agree with the notion. because it require less ground space and in the smaller space we will have a thousand of people living.

furthermore, if we build tall buildings it require less space and if the arcitecture is so it will be easy for people to live there like the modren techniques which the designers uses in the interior of the apartment, like convertable beds which switches in to sofas and small kitchen. these kind of techniques are mostely used in the cities with the high and dence population like Karachi, Mumbai and New york etc.

In pakistan around 1970 the government build apartments for the needy persons in Lahore which are really close to my house so that people live in it and the surprising thing is that people still living in them, so we can say that it is a really usefull and for the long term for the people living in the tall buildings and it is economical as well. on the other hand it is less expensive to the houses to build a house first we need to buy land and then the construction cost so it will be more costely then the appartments and most of the buildings have a lot of facilities like the plumber, electriction, gym and swiming pool. we cannot have these kind of fasclities at homes.

To conclude that i can say that to build tall apartment blocks is more suitable then the houses the main thing is it requirs less space then the houses and these hame more to fasclitate people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing with the statement that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide homes in large cities. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as space-saving benefits, affordability, and shared facilities like a "plumber, electriction, gym and swiming pool." However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the argument regarding land and construction costs is extended with some support, other points—such as the mention of cities like Karachi, Mumbai, and New York—remain under-developed and are not clearly connected to an extended line of argument. The response meets the minimum word count requirement, though nine words copied directly from the task prompt were excluded from the official count. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to extend and support all main ideas fully throughout the response without leaving points abrupt or vaguely explained.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement and presents a clear stance from the beginning to the end. There is a discernible attempt to structure the response into a logical progression, moving from space-saving merits to modern interior techniques, historical local examples, and finally cost comparisons. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The writer relies heavily on basic conjunctions and run-on structures rather than effective cohesive devices, resulting in long, breathless sentences lacking appropriate punctuation. For instance, sentences are often strung together with commas instead of full stops or proper transitional markers. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal referencing is not always clear, making it occasionally challenging to follow the logical flow between ideas. To improve, the writer should use clearer paragraph breaks, avoid run-on sentences, and employ a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a minimally sufficient range to discuss housing and urban populations. The writer attempts less common vocabulary items, such as "architecture," "convertable," and "economical," but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, form, and spelling. Examples of lexical errors include writing "strongely" instead of strongly, "modren" instead of modern, "usefull" instead of useful, "costely" instead of costly, and "fasclities" instead of facilities. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to restrict the score. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their control of less common lexical items, ensure correct word forms, and eliminate frequent spelling mistakes by carefully proofreading their work.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying on a mix of simple sentences and attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. Grammatical errors are common throughout the text. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement and clause structures, such as in the opening sentence: "Deciding to build home in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks, I strongely agree...", which results in a comma splice and incorrect singular/plural noun usage ("home" instead of homes). Other grammatical errors involve preposition usage and verb tense consistency, such as "people still living in them" lacking an auxiliary verb, and "it require less ground space" where the third-person singular inflection is missing. Punctuation control is weak, with multiple clauses incorrectly joined by commas rather than separated into distinct sentences. To progress, the writer needs to increase sentence variety, maintain strict grammatical accuracy with verb forms and plurals, and improve sentence boundary punctuation.
