Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response sits at a low level because the length requirement of a minimum of 250 words is severely unmet, with the student writing only 80 words. The essay attempts to address the task question by stating a disagreement with the statement that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide homes. However, the position is only partially developed and remains limited, touching briefly on risks to residents and health issues caused by limited space, before trailing off mid-sentence. Ideas are heavily under-developed and lack the necessary extension, examples, and detail expected for a full academic essay response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The writing shows some organisation of ideas by immediately stating a clear stance in the opening sentences, but there is no clear overall progression across the text as it abruptly cuts off. Paragraphing is attempted, but the text is fragmented into very short, broken blocks. Cohesive devices are largely absent or inadequate, and referencing between sentences is weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow a logical line of thought from the introduction through to the incomplete body of the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, showing a limited yet minimally adequate range for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as spelling mistakes ('becasuse') and awkward word choices or collocations like 'for their cares and works' or 'increasing numerous disease'. These errors and limited word choices cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from demonstrating any flexibility or precision in expression.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures are very restricted, relying on simple sentences and flawed attempts at complex constructions. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that impede communication, such as severe subject-verb agreement issues ('Build tall apartment blocks might best way'), incorrect preposition usage ('for build'), and incomplete dependent clauses ('of if build large apartment'). These persistent mistakes cause noticeable difficulty for the reader to decipher the intended meaning.
