Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt regarding whether building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide enough homes in large cities, though it does so in a very limited and repetitive manner. A position is discernible—that tall apartments are beneficial because they save land and provide lifestyle facilities—but this position is not always clearly sustained throughout. Ideas are limited and under-developed, relying on repetitive assertions about saving space and offering facilities rather than extending arguments with robust examples or varied reasoning. For instance, the mention that children enjoy apartments because of gardens is underdeveloped and lacks broader connection to the central housing debate. Furthermore, sixteen words copied directly from the task prompt were excluded from the official word count, leaving the student's original contribution just meeting the minimum threshold.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is some basic organisation attempted, with the text divided into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Information and ideas are frequently disjointed, and the relationships between sentences are often unclear. Cohesive devices are very limited, repetitive, and frequently inaccurate, relying heavily on words like 'apartment', 'now days', and basic conjunctions without effective substitution or referencing. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph coherence is disrupted by a lack of logical sequencing. For example, jumping abruptly from parking and kitchen facilities to ease of living in the city creates a fragmented reading experience that fails to guide the reader smoothly through a structured argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, representing a limited but minimally adequate range for attempting the task. The student frequently repeats words such as 'apartment', 'large cities', and 'facilities' throughout the essay. There are noticeable errors in word form, choice, and spelling, such as 'speres' for spaces, 'bulid' instead of built, 'becuse', 'faclities', 'luxuryes', 'aera', and 'opinin'. These lexical inaccuracies and frequent misspellings are prominent, though they do not entirely prevent the reader from grasping the general topic. The lack of varied or less common vocabulary prevents the response from achieving a higher level, as the student struggles to express ideas with precision or appropriate stylistic collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting primarily of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex ones. Frequent grammatical errors occur across nearly every sentence, including tense errors ('homes were enough', 'apartment was luxuryes facility gave'), missing or incorrect articles ('a one time build', 'in a large cities'), incorrect verb forms ('are build tall apartment'), and poor subject-verb agreement ('apartment people were more social activies doing'). Punctuation is also erratic, with comma splices and run-on constructions appearing frequently. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning in several places, restricting the text to a foundational level of grammatical control.
