Student answer (Band 6.0)

Tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide accommodation in big cities. There are various advantages provided by skyscrapers which include housing many people at once, saving space and providing more facilities in one building. These shall be explored in detail.

To begin with, to a higher extent high-rise buildings provide enough homes in large cities because they can accommodate an enormous number of residents. With its architectural design, the building has many floors and each floor contains vast rooms which are detached making it suitable for many people to stay. For example, Bangkok has many skyscrapper condos which reach up to 50 floors thereby providing shelter to various individuals. Furthermore, tall buildings saves the cities' space. Instead of building separate unit houses that can take up all the space in the city whilst housing a family in each house, tall apartment blocks will occupy the same land with plenty rooms. In addition to the above, having tall buildings is like killing one bird with two stones. There are many facilities provided in skyscrapers like swimming, gym and shops. People don't have to move from their homes to buy small items. For example, In Thailand many condos have the famous 7/11 shops at the ground floor.

However, even though tall buildings can house a larger population at once, residents have less freedom than people staying in separate houses. For example, there are many rules posed in the building to be followed by everyone there by limiting individual way of life like playing music with desirable volume and gardening is impossible or limited.

In summary, high-rise buildings are the best way of providing accommodation in large cities as compared to the simple houses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing with the statement, supporting it with relevant arguments such as space-saving, high capacity, and integrated facilities. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully explored. For example, your point about residents having less freedom is introduced in the third body paragraph but lacks sufficient elaboration or a broader societal comparison. To move to a higher level, you need to extend all your main arguments equally with deeper explanations or more robust examples, rather than relying on brief mentions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices to connect your thoughts, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In summary'. However, some of your referencing and cohesion feel a bit mechanical or imprecise. For instance, transitioning between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother, and phrases like 'In addition to the above, having tall buildings is like killing one bird with two stones' introduce a slightly informal idiom that disrupts the logical flow. To improve, aim for a more sophisticated use of cohesive devices and ensure your paragraph transitions are seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'skyscraper condos', 'enormous number of residents', and 'integrated facilities'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as writing 'skyscrapper', 'saves the cities' space' instead of 'saves city space', and using the idiom 'killing one bird with two stones' incorrectly (the standard idiom is 'killing two birds with one stone'). These errors do not impede communication, but to reach a higher band, you must use less common vocabulary with greater precision and control over collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout your response, such as 'Even though tall buildings can house a larger population at once, residents have less freedom than people staying in separate houses.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present, including pluralization and article issues like 'plenty rooms' instead of 'plenty of rooms', and 'rules posed in the building' rather than 'rules imposed'. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and your meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher score, you should increase your control over complex sentence forms and produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences.
