Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many large cities finding in a housing for a growing population is becoming the series problem. Some people believe that the best solution is to build tall apartment blocks.I partly agree with this view because high rise building can provide many home in a limited area, but I do not think they are the only solution.

On the one hand, tall apartment buildings can be a practical way to provide housing in a crowded cities. since land and large cities is often expensive and limited building upwards allows more people to live in the same area. For example a single high-rise building can contain hundreds of apartments while using much less land than hundreds of separate houses. this skin also helps people live closer to their work places, schools and public transport reducing long daily journeys.

On the other hand relying only on tall apartment block and create several problems. very crowded residential ideas put me put pressure on public service such as schools ,hospitals, roads ,and public transport. In addition some people prefer houses with gardens in more private outdoor space. High rise buildings can also make cities feel overcrowded if they are built without any parks in recreational areas. did Ford government should consider other housing solution as well such as developing affordable houses and less crowded areas and improving public transport between cities and suburbs.

In conclusion, I agree that all apartment blocks are in effective way to provide more homes in large cities, especially where land is limited. however I do not believe they are the best solution and every situation. a combination of high rise apartments, affordable housing and better urban planning would be a more balanced approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position regarding whether tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide enough homes in large cities. The writer partly agrees, acknowledging the benefits of high-rise buildings for maximizing space while also presenting valid counter-arguments about infrastructure pressure and lifestyle preferences. This balanced approach allows the response to meet the requirements of the lower band securely while displaying elements of the next level. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed rather than fully extended; for instance, the point about infrastructure pressure could benefit from more specific elaboration on how public services are affected. The conclusion successfully summarises the writer's stance, contributing to an overall well-supported argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure that guides the reader logically through the introduction, body paragraphs covering both sides, and a conclusion. The response uses basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' to signal shifts in perspective, which is characteristic of the lower band. To reach the next level fully, the use of cohesive devices needs to be more flexible and varied, moving beyond formulaic transition phrases. Additionally, referencing and punctuation issues occasionally make the flow slightly mechanical, such as missing capitalisation and spacing errors between sentences, which disrupts the natural progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their thoughts on urban housing effectively. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'infrastructure', 'recreational areas', and 'urban planning', which shows an ambition to expand their lexical range. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as writing 'finding in a housing' instead of finding housing, and 'series problem' instead of serious problem. Spelling and word-form errors occur throughout the text, including 'high rise' without hyphens and 'did Ford government' instead of therefore the government. These slips constrain the vocabulary score, as they demonstrate control limited to adequate rather than precise or flexible usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. There is good control of basic sentence construction, but frequent mechanical and grammatical errors persist. Issues include missing articles ('in a housing', 'in a crowded cities'), incorrect prepositions ('in a limited area' where 'to' or 'within' might be preferred), and a lack of proper punctuation and capitalisation at the start of sentences (e.g., 'this skin also helps', 'however I do not'). These errors prevent the response from achieving a higher band because, while communication is rarely impeded, the frequency of basic mechanical mistakes indicates that error-free sentences are not sustained consistently enough across the text.
