Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether building tall apartment blocks is the best solution for housing shortages in large cities. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed. For instance, the writer lists several alternative solutions such as developing regional areas or controlling population growth, but dismisses them quickly without providing deep elaboration or fully exploring their implications. The position of the writer is generally clear throughout the essay, leaning towards agreeing with the statement, yet the reasoning provided for rejecting alternative views lacks strong supporting details and depth. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to extend their arguments further, providing more comprehensive explanations and concrete examples to substantiate their main claims.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some overall organization with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and paragraphing is used to separate distinct points. Nevertheless, there is a lack of clear overall progression and smooth transitions between sentences and ideas. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate, repetitive, or inadequate, as seen with transitional phrases like 'The another one solution' and 'In practicle sence'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical flow seamlessly. Achieving a higher band would require the writer to use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices, ensure better logical sequencing between sentences, and establish a more fluid progression of ideas from one paragraph to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message of the essay. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'infrastructure' and 'amenities', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'gowing' for growing, 'facilty' for facility, 'practicle sence', and 'awreness'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and impede fluent communication. To improve in this criterion, the writer must expand their lexical range, pay closer attention to correct word forms and collocations, and minimize spelling errors by proofreading their work carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is limited, relying heavily on simple sentence patterns alongside attempts at complex structures that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions within grammatical structures, such as 'people are finding difficulties to buy home', 'residents apartment are not building', and 'contruct a tall building'. These frequent errors create noticeable strain for the reader and occasionally obscure the intended meaning. To reach the next level, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of error-free complex sentences, improve control over basic grammar rules like articles and pluralization, and ensure accurate verb tense usage throughout the response.
