Student answer (Band 6.0)

the rapid growth in populations in large cities has created a serious shortage of living houses. some people belive that building tall apartments blocks is the best solution for this problem. i largely agree with this view, although i belive that building tall apartments should be combined with other form of development will be appropriate solution for this problem.

One major benefit of building tall apartments block is that the make effient use of the land. With the growing population and development there will be little space of land left available for agricultural. many developed countries like singapore and hong kong the make tall buidlings to eliminate the land issue. this can also protect the agricultural land.

Another benefit is apartment blocks can provide with easy acces to essential services and public transport. with many people live in one area it becomes more economical toprovide facilities like transport, school and hospitals.

however relying entirely on tall apartments is not the very good solution because it create croweded places that might not be very pleasent for living particularly when the are poorly designed.

In conclusion, i agree that building tall apartments blocks in large cities is important and most effective way to providing housing to large number of people in cities. because it allow a large number of people to live in small piece of land.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that largely agrees with the statement while introducing a nuanced view that tall buildings should be combined with other forms of development. Relevant ideas are presented, such as land preservation in densely populated cities like Singapore and Hong Kong, as well as the provision of essential public services. However, some ideas remain under-developed, particularly the brief mention of agricultural land and the argument regarding accessibility, which lack deeper elaboration. Furthermore, it is important to note that the response falls short of the required minimum length, containing only 225 words instead of the mandated 250 words, which negatively impacts the overall completeness of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a logical progression of ideas, moving from land efficiency to public services, followed by a counterpoint and a concluding summary. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always clear, with transitional markers being rather basic. Paragraphing is utilised, but internal cohesion within paragraphs could be smoother to establish clearer links between sentences. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing words clearly point to their intended antecedents without interrupting the flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'population', 'development', 'agricultural land', and 'essential services'. There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'efficient', 'eliminate', and 'economical'. However, noticeable spelling, word-choice, and word-formation errors occur throughout the text, such as writing 'belive' instead of 'believe', 'form' instead of 'forms', 'effient' instead of 'efficient', 'buidlings' instead of 'buildings', 'acces' instead of 'access', and 'croweded' instead of 'crowded'. These lexical inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the score because they reveal a lack of precise control over less common items and spelling conventions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses such as 'although i belive that...' and 'particularly when the are poorly designed.' There are some errors in grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, including missing capitalisation for the pronoun 'i', lowercase beginnings of sentences, missing articles like 'the make tall buildings' instead of 'they make tall buildings', and prepositional issues such as 'provide with easy acces'. Punctuation is also occasionally neglected, particularly regarding sentence boundaries and capitalization. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument despite the structural flaws.
