Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially and presents a position, although it is not always clear throughout the entire essay. The writer manages to express a clear viewpoint in the introduction by stating a complete agreement with building tall apartment blocks for affordability and convenience. However, the ideas presented to support this position remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the arguments regarding maintenance costs and monthly installments are mentioned briefly without sufficient extension or detailed examples. Similarly, while the counter-arguments acknowledging drawbacks such as a lack of personal gardens and increased noise disturbance are introduced in the third paragraph, they lack the depth required to fully explore both sides of the prompt. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to develop each main idea more thoroughly by providing concrete explanations and well-elaborated examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some overall organization with an identifiable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which gives it a recognizable structure. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the arrangement of ideas feels somewhat disjointed. Cohesive devices are used, but they tend to be inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the repeated use of phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Further explaining my views.' Paragraphing is attempted, though the division of ideas could be managed more logically; for example, grouping the discussion of economic benefits and disadvantages more clearly would improve the flow. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, making it harder for the reader to follow the logical connections between sentences. To achieve a higher level, the writer must ensure that cohesive devices are employed with greater accuracy and variety, and that each paragraph transitions smoothly into the next to establish a stronger sense of progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task, demonstrating a restricted vocabulary range. The student makes noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the response, such as 'convinent', 'predominat', 'rathher', 'developmet', 'apartmentr', 'strudent', and 'theit'. These slips and inaccuracies can cause some difficulty for the reader. While the writer attempts to use some less common vocabulary related to housing and city life, such as 'installment' and 'maintenance', the execution is flawed due to persistent lexical errors. To improve this criterion, the writer needs to expand their working vocabulary, pay closer attention to standard spelling conventions, and ensure that words are chosen and formed correctly according to the intended context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay utilizes a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in basic grammatical patterns, including article usage, pluralization, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within grammatical structures, as seen in phrases like 'providing more number of home', 'person do not need', and 'close room partner'. Punctuation is also problematic in several places, with missing spaces and incorrect comma placements. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. To reach the next band, the writer should focus on expanding their structural repertoire while increasing grammatical accuracy, ensuring that basic agreements and verb forms are controlled reliably across the majority of sentences.
