Student answer (Band 6.5)

I do agree with the statement that it building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide enough homes.

We are living in times where there is unequal distrubution of technology, resources and development in large cities, urban areas and in rural villages. This has lead to a situation where vast majority of people choose to leave their home town in search of better oppurtunities and facilities. As a consequence, the population of large cities is increasing exponentially. Again, stemming from this, limited housing and sky rocketed rent issues arrive. There is no enough land space in a city that is taking care of millions of people in a limited cramped space. If it can not be increased by width, increasing the space by height is the better option. This will solve the housing and rent issue well in the cities and provide an equal oppurtunity for a dignified life.

We can take Japan and China as a live example of this issue where tall apartments have been succesfull to provide an alternative solution for housing issue.

Yet, each solution comes with its own drawbacks. Owing to the capitalism, the builder companies now want to build tiny apartments in the tall buildings to cramp up more space to accomodate more people. This can further sprout seeds for other issues, for example researches show people living in cramped spaces tend to experience more stress than people living in open spaces with more area to move freely. We humans, being social beings, our environment, nature and our company has huge impacts on our emotional well being. The enviroment we live in can also determine our mental and emotional health. Thus, while building tall apartments can provide a solution to the housing issue, it is important to also consider the quality of life that it could provide to the settlers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide enough homes. You explain the pressure created by migration to cities, limited land and rising rents, and you acknowledge a relevant drawback concerning cramped living conditions. These points address the question and show some development. However, the support is uneven: the reference to Japan and China is asserted rather than illustrated with a specific example, and the claim that high-rise construction will solve rent problems needs explanation. The discussion of quality of life is relevant, but you could connect it more directly to whether this approach is the best solution. Developing these points and briefly comparing alternatives would make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall shape: it introduces your view, develops the reasons for building upwards, and then considers a drawback before concluding with a qualification. Linking phrases such as “As a consequence,” “Yet,” and “Thus” help signal the movement between ideas. The progression is generally understandable, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Again, stemming from this” does not precisely show how population growth leads to housing shortages, and the final paragraph moves from capitalism to stress and emotional health without fully explaining each link. Paragraphing is appropriate, but clearer topic sentences and more explicit connections between claims and examples would make the argument flow more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “unequal distribution,” “limited housing,” “cramped spaces,” and “emotional well-being.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “dignified life” and “sprout seeds,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural in context. “Sky rocketed rent issues” and “cramp up more space” do not express the intended ideas precisely; “soaring rents” and “fit more residents into a limited area” would be more natural. Spelling errors, including “distrubution,” “oppurtunities,” and “succesfull,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise collocations and check spelling, especially when using less familiar vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If it cannot be increased by width, increasing the space by height is the better option” and a concession introduced by “while.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening phrase “I do agree … that it building” has an incorrect clause structure; write “I agree that building…” Also, “This has lead” should be “This has led,” and “There is no enough land space” needs a different construction, such as “There is not enough land.” In “We humans, being social beings, our environment…,” the sentence lacks a clear grammatical connection between its parts. More careful editing of clauses, verb forms and sentence boundaries would improve control.
