Student answer (Band 5.0)

The rapid growth of population in urban areas has made builders and government to construct large apartments to accommodate significant number of people. Some people argue it. I partially agree with this point, Although it provides home to individuals, but it also has some consequences.

On the one hand, construction of high buildings in densly populated cities accommodate substantial amount of individuals. Moreover, less land is required to fit in populations as urban areas are fully occupied and buildings are in easy access with the town center. For instance, buildings in main city provides ease to citizens as the are constructed near the roads, hospitals and markets.

On the other hand, a large number of buildings can make the city congested and can create problems like pollution. As a large number of citizens live in high rise buildings they also make waste likewise. Furthermore, vehicles from these buildings also cause air pollution. In addition, if these buildings are constructed in other areas or in low populated areas it could benefit the society by causing less pollution and waste and also in order to populate the rural areas.

To conclude, Government should make laws to densly populate rural areas with construction of la

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a relevant, partly qualified position: “I partially agree,” and explain that tall buildings can house many people while also contributing to congestion and pollution. These points address the question, but the position is not fully sustained: the conclusion shifts towards populating rural areas and ends unfinished (“construction of la…”), so your final view is unclear. The supporting ideas are also limited. For example, you mention access to roads, hospitals and markets, but do not explain how this makes tall apartment blocks the best way to provide enough homes. The response is 202 words, below the required 250, which leaves little room to develop your reasoning. Extend each main point with explanation or a specific example, and complete the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

Your response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the shift in argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear. The move from pollution caused by high-rise residents to building in low-population areas is abrupt, and the final sentence is incomplete, preventing the essay from reaching a clear ending. Some linking is also mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Moreover,” “Furthermore” and “In addition.” Develop a clearer sequence in each paragraph—for example, claim, explanation and example—and use references or transitions that show how each point connects to your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “urban areas,” “accommodate,” “congested,” “pollution” and “high rise buildings,” so the main subject is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which makes parts of the argument less natural. For example, “fit in populations” is not an appropriate expression for housing people, and “densly populate” is an awkward way to describe planning development. There are also spelling errors such as “densly,” and repeated use of “buildings” and “large number.” Build a more precise range for discussing housing and urban planning, and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a concession in “Although it provides home to individuals…” and a conditional idea beginning “if these buildings are constructed…”. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “has made builders and government to construct,” where the verb pattern is incorrect, and “buildings in main city provides,” where the subject and verb do not agree. The opening also combines “Although” with “but,” and the final sentence is incomplete. Practise accurate verb patterns, agreement, articles and sentence boundaries. Aim to make each sentence complete and check that subordinate clauses are connected correctly.
