The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Urbanisation, that is, the movement of people from rural villages to major cities, has become popular in recent years. Constructing tall apartment buildings can provide housing for a large number of people in cities. In my opinion, I agree with the statement.

Over the years, city dwellers have experienced a growth in their population numbers because people from rural areas have migrated to larger towns for better education, lifestyle, and healthcare. With this wave of relocation, accommodation remains an area of concern because present infrastructure is not sufficient to provide housing for all. Building tall rectangular blocks of concrete is an effective solution for several reasons, the major reason being that it can offer a home to a larger number of individuals, without the need of constructing separate bungalows for every family. Secondly, apartment buildings are equipped with various amenities, such as lifts, security and parking, and children's play area, allowing people to be at ease. Moreover, from the evironmental perspective, constructing a building on one land is wiser than utilising many natural lands to build houses.

On the other hand, flats offer relatively lesser freedom and privacy to its residents than those living in bungalows, because of shared spaces like corridors and terraces, which may result into a number of conflicts. In addition, taller apartment buildings might block the sunlight reaching to smaller houses in the same locality. However, it must be noted that flats provides the opportunity to communicate with a larger of group of people, and such networking could be beneficial in the future.

In conclusion, although constructing taller residential complexes could be an issue for some, they could be successful in providing accomodation to people coming to bigger cities, fostering collaboration and cooperation among its residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I agree with the statement”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the central issue by explaining how apartment blocks can house more people on limited land, and you give relevant supporting points about amenities and environmental impact. You also acknowledge disadvantages, including reduced privacy and blocked sunlight, before explaining a possible social benefit. This meets the task well, with ideas extended and supported. To strengthen the response further, develop the comparison with alternatives more explicitly: explain why tall blocks are the best way, rather than simply one effective solution, and qualify broad claims such as the environmental benefit with a concrete example or condition. The counterargument about sunlight could also be linked more directly to your overall position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from your position to supporting reasons, then a counterargument and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Secondly,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers understand the stages of your argument. Connections between ideas are generally clear, including the shift from land use to the disadvantages of shared living. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the final paragraph introduces “fostering collaboration and cooperation” without fully preparing or explaining this point in the body. The sentence beginning “However, it must be noted” also makes the counterargument section less direct. For stronger cohesion, use more precise references between claims and explain how each paragraph’s points support your stated agreement.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “urbanisation,” “accommodation,” “amenities,” “privacy,” and “environmental perspective.” These choices allow you to discuss both the practical and social effects of apartment living, and some less common expressions show an effort to write in an appropriately formal style. However, several collocations or word choices are not fully natural, such as “movement … has become popular,” “growth in their population numbers,” and “a larger of group of people.” There are also spelling errors in “evironmental” and “accomodation.” Aim for more precise, idiomatic phrasing and proofread spelling; for example, describe urbanisation as increasing or accelerating, rather than becoming popular. This would make the vocabulary more flexible and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the opening definition (“Urbanisation, that is, the movement…”) and clauses explaining reasons and consequences. Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the argument remains easy to understand. Some grammatical errors nevertheless occur. For example, “which may result into a number of conflicts” has an incorrect preposition in the verb pattern, while “flats provides” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “allowing people to be at ease,” the list structure is not fully parallel, and “a larger of group” also disrupts the sentence’s grammatical form. Review agreement, verb patterns, and the construction of lists, then proofread longer sentences carefully. More consistently accurate complex sentences would demonstrate stronger control.
