Student answer (Band 6.0)

Overpopulation is one of the emerging concerns globally. To accommodate a large number of people, it is indeed important to construct tall apartments in bustling cities, so that people can live comfortably and have their own private space.

To achieve this goal, the government must introduce new planning schemes that are budget-friendly and reliable, especially in areas that require new development and modern infrastructure.

More and more people are moving to cities because of how convenient life is with almost everything within reach. From education to healthcare facilities, food delivery services to online shopping delivered at your doorstep, city life seems much more fascinating. And providing more apartment buildings can help people manage their daily life more easily.

For example, a townhouse can only accommodate a family, no more than 5 to 6 people and the whole house area belongs to only those six members of the family, so does the all the townhouses in a community. If apartment buidings starts built there, that means thousands of family members can be accommodated there instead of a few people. That can help make more parks nearby for the apartment residents and many other facilities.

Undeniably, townhouses and private houses hold their significant value too. People always have their own preferences, whether they want to live in an apartment building or their own private house. Making more apartments will subsequently help people to have more choice and freedom.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You take a generally clear position in favour of tall apartment blocks and give relevant reasons, including accommodating more families and making city life more convenient. The example contrasting a townhouse with an apartment building helps illustrate the space-saving argument. However, the response does not fully develop the question of whether this is the *best* way to provide enough homes: the planning-scheme point is introduced but not explained, and the claim that apartments create more parks is not clearly supported. The brief acknowledgement of private houses adds balance, but its connection to the main argument could be clearer. The response is 14 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop and support these ideas. Extend the reasoning with a specific example and explain why high-rise housing is preferable to alternatives.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: it introduces the issue, gives reasons for apartment construction, provides an example, and ends by recognising that people have different housing preferences. Paragraphing generally helps the reader follow this progression, and links such as “For example” and “Undeniably” signal the purpose of the next point. Some connections are less clear, however. The planning-schemes paragraph feels detached from the argument because it does not explain how such schemes would provide homes, while the link between apartment blocks and creating more parks is also difficult to follow. The final paragraph introduces choice and freedom without explicitly returning to whether tall blocks are the best solution. Make these relationships explicit and use transitions to show how each point supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “overpopulation,” “modern infrastructure,” “accommodated,” and “private space,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “bustling cities” and “within reach.” Some choices are imprecise or awkward in context: “fascinating” does not naturally describe the practical appeal of city life, and “manage their daily life more easily” is broad. Spelling errors in “buidings” and “townhouses” (in the phrase “all the townhouses”) also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise housing and urban-planning vocabulary, and check spelling carefully. For example, you could describe city life as “convenient” and explain that high-rise housing “increases residential density.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the opening purpose clause “so that people can live comfortably” and the sentence beginning “More and more people are moving to cities because…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In “If apartment buidings starts built there,” the conditional clause has problems with subject–verb agreement and verb form; a correct version would be “If apartment buildings are built there.” The phrase “so does the all the townhouses” has an incorrect structure and article use, and “a townhouse can only accommodate a family, no more than 5 to 6 people” would be clearer with a more controlled sentence structure. Review agreement, passive forms, articles, and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
