IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Large cities demand majority of the space for commercial use, while very less area is left for residential space. Some people say building skyscrapers is the best solution for housing crisis. I agree to this statement because tall buildings not only require minimal space, but also accommodate a lot of families in the same block.
Living in apartments helps facing problems along with the rest of the families residing, which would be difficult to tackle alone in an individual house. Moreover, maintenance in an apartment is easier as the work is shared between different individuals, instead of carrying the burden alone. Well established flats often provide markets and other daily essential facilities in the very apartment, which makes it easier for the people living to get required necessities from close proximity. This is difficult while living in an individual home.
Apartments also provide security from threats like burglary and other common crimes which are very usual in cities. Surveillance through cc cameras and security guards throughout the day gives safety to a lot of families in single building. For instance, a lot of people choose to live in rented apartments because they do not plan to settle in the big cities for longer period.
Some people believe that individual houses are better because, apartments face a lot of drainage issues and water shortage because of a lot of families under single block. Conversely, an individual house do not apply much stress on the resources. Furthermore, apartments do not give the independency like a single house does. People have a choice to modify the exterior look for their house, which is not possible with apartments.
In conclusion, even though individual houses give private lifestyle to a family, I believe that in large cities choosing apartments is the best option. Apartments in big communities provide security, community experience, easy maintenance and utilities which is very difficult to manage living by ourselves in metropolitan cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that tall apartment blocks are the best response to limited urban space, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons, including shared maintenance, nearby facilities and security, and you acknowledge counterarguments about water, drainage and privacy. This covers the task and shows some development, but the support is uneven: the security point has a brief example about renters, which does not clearly demonstrate the claimed safety benefit, while the resource and independence objections are listed more than explained. To strengthen the response further, explain how high-rise construction compares with other housing solutions and develop each example so it directly supports your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion that returns to your position. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For instance,” “Conversely” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening sentence about commercial space is not explicitly linked to why apartment blocks are preferable, and “Living in apartments helps facing problems” does not clearly identify what problems are meant. The example about rented apartments also shifts from security to length of residence without a clear bridge. Make the relationship between each claim and its supporting detail more explicit, and use references such as “this arrangement” only when their meaning is unmistakable.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “residential space,” “housing crisis,” “maintenance,” “surveillance,” “burglary” and “metropolitan cities.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or awkward, as in “demand majority of the space,” “very less area,” “facing problems,” and “the independency.” “CC cameras” is also an imprecise expression in this context. Such slips do not prevent understanding, but they reduce naturalness and precision. Aim to learn common word partnerships and use more exact terms—for example, distinguish between limited land availability, shared facilities and building security.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a reason clause (“because tall buildings…”), a contrast clause (“even though individual houses…”) and relative clauses (“which makes it easier…”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “an individual house do not apply” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “because, apartments face” uses punctuation incorrectly after the conjunction. There are also problems with articles and number in phrases such as “under single block” and “for longer period.” The sentence beginning “Living in apartments helps facing problems” has an incomplete or faulty verb pattern. Review agreement, articles and verb complements, then proofread punctuation around conjunctions.
