Student answer (Band 5.0)

More number of houses are need to be build in cities to accomodate the increasing population. The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build taller buildings. I strongly agree with the idea because tall appartment blocks accomodate more population and cover less space.

Taller buildings provides more accomodation fascilties despite covering less land. As a consequence land can be reserved for other beneficial purposes such as agriculture. For example when population in big cities increased, instead of building single story houses, governments should focus on increasing the construction vertically on existing residential blocks.

Although, there some drawbacks of taller buildings as well such as more people in tall apartments may lead to over croudness in hospitals, schools and other social places.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a clear position—“I strongly agree”—and give relevant reasons: apartment blocks can house more people on less land, while land may be used for agriculture. You also acknowledge a drawback involving pressure on hospitals and schools. However, the response addresses the task only partially because these points are brief and not sufficiently explained or supported with a developed example. The final drawback is introduced but not connected to a conclusion or weighed against your main argument. The response contains 113 words, below the required 250; 13 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. To strengthen your response, explain how vertical construction increases housing supply and develop a specific example, then assess the drawback and restate your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, understandable sequence: it introduces your agreement, gives a reason and example, and then mentions a disadvantage. The use of “As a consequence” helps show a relationship between ideas, and “Although” signals a contrast. However, the overall progression is limited because the essay has no developed conclusion, and the final contrast is left unfinished rather than explained. The example about governments building vertically is relevant but needs a clearer link to the claim about preserving land. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs for your position, supporting reasons, counterargument and conclusion, and connect each point explicitly so the reader can follow how it supports your answer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “population,” “residential blocks,” “agriculture” and “social places,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings are inaccurate, such as “accomodate,” “appartment,” “fascilties” and “over croudness.” The phrase “more number of houses” is also unnatural, while “cover less space” is imprecise for describing land use. These errors make the writing less fluent and sometimes require the reader to work out your intended meaning. Build a more accurate set of housing and urban-planning expressions, and check spelling and collocations when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and a longer sentence beginning “For example,” and the main position can be understood. However, the range of structures is limited, and errors occur frequently in basic sentence patterns. For instance, “More number of houses are need to be build” has problems with agreement and verb forms; “Taller buildings provides” has subject–verb disagreement; and “Although, there some drawbacks” is missing a verb and uses the contrast marker incorrectly. The sentence about people in tall apartments also needs clearer grammatical construction. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, passive forms and complete clauses, then use a wider range of sentence structures while checking punctuation.
