Student answer (Band 6.0)

The most regarded method to provide plenty of homes in large cities is to construct tall apartment blocks. In my opinion I strongly agree with this statement.

Having tall buildings means less space will be taken and hence give room for more construction to take place meaning more homes will be available and this comes as a win in matters space and saving resources.A good example is Nairobi City, that has less land space the developers here have taken advantage of this and constructed skyscrappers and apartments which cater for the huge city population.

The other side of the coin to this is,apartments construction cannot be the only solution to housing problems.Additional measures such as population level control can be initiated to help manage the number of individuals requiring shelter in cities. One of the ways is through encouraging the embracing the use of family planning methods amongst individuals and thus controlling the number of people.A better option can be improvement of infrastructure and providing the required services in the rural areas and by doing this more people will be encoraged to live in the rural areas and in return reducing the need to construct tall residential areas in the cities.

In conclusion, apartment construction has proved to be a better way of solving the housing need in large cities, moreso this does not have to be the only solution to this and more options should also be considered and explored in this matter.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the opening: you strongly agree that tall apartment blocks can provide more homes, and you support this with the space-saving argument and the Nairobi example. You also recognise that high-rise construction is not the only response, discussing family planning and improved rural services. However, these alternatives receive more attention than the reasons tall blocks are the best way, so the central argument is not developed evenly. The Nairobi example would be stronger with a specific explanation of how apartments have increased housing capacity or addressed demand. The response also falls 11 words short of the required minimum. Develop the main supporting points further and make the relationship between your agreement and the alternative measures clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting high-rise housing, a paragraph considering other measures, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “The other side of the coin” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument, and the ideas are generally easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some features of stronger progression. However, the second body paragraph shifts from the question of housing design to population control and rural development without clearly explaining how these points relate to whether tall blocks are the best solution. Some transitions are also mechanical, and the long sentences make relationships between ideas less clear. Use more precise links and organise each paragraph around one clearly stated point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “apartment blocks,” “developers,” “population,” “infrastructure,” and “family planning.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “The other side of the coin” and “cater for the huge city population.” Some choices, however, are inaccurate or awkward: “most regarded method” does not naturally mean the most effective method, and “win in matters space” is unclear. Spelling errors such as “skyscrappers” and “encoraged” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, but more precise collocations would make the argument sound more natural. Prioritise accurate, topic-specific phrasing over elaborate expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a cause-and-effect construction with “Having tall buildings means…” and a conditional-style explanation beginning “by doing this.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors affect clarity. For example, “Having tall buildings means less space will be taken and hence give room” has an unclear subject relationship, while “encouraging the embracing the use” contains a faulty structure. Several sentences run together without spaces after full stops or commas, and the opening paragraph has a comma splice in “In my opinion I strongly agree.” These are some errors rather than a barrier to understanding. Improve sentence boundaries and check that clauses have clear subjects and correctly formed verb patterns.
