Student answer (Band 6.5)

Rapid urbanization has led to an increased housing shortage in metropolitin cities. Some people argue that high rise buildings can provide accomodate large number of people while others disagree with this. I strongly agree that modernized buildings are an effective solution, because they aid in effecient usage of land and sustainable living.

To begin with, tower blocks provide sufficient housing to a great proportion of population. Urbanization issues such as land shortage and deforestation are prominent today. Without proper management residents might find themselves on streets with no proper amenities. For instance, the rapid increase in population post pandemic in large cities like Delhi, high rise buildings created homes for a number of individuals.

Additionally, such mordern settings allow residents to enjoy a wider range of ammenities as overall utility expenses reduce. With the construction of tall buildings, there is a significant reduction in the usage of construction material, which allows investment in amenities like playground and gym for the residents. Moreover, it makes living, cost effective providing a comfortable and affordable lifestyle to everyone. This can be understood by an example of Singapore's Housing board (SHB) and flats, where vertical housing has allowed integration of shared parks, parking space, swimming pool, and playground. Therefore, this allows staying within the budget while providing all comfort and necessary facilities.

Although, high rise buildings have a drawback of reduced privacy with certain emergency and safety concerns, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Modernized and an affordable lifestyle being provided by new societies allows a substantial amount of people to lead their dream lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that tall buildings are an effective response, and you maintain this view in the conclusion. You address the central issue with two relevant reasons—using land efficiently and enabling shared facilities—and support them with examples from Delhi and Singapore. This meets the task well. However, some support is asserted rather than fully explained: the Delhi example does not show how many homes were created or why towers were the best option, while the claim that construction uses less material and reduces costs needs clearer justification. Develop these links and briefly compare tall blocks with alternatives to make the argument more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present supporting reasons, and the final paragraph acknowledges a drawback before reaffirming your position. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Additionally,” “Moreover,” and “Therefore” help guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate and the main ideas are easy to follow. At times, however, the connections between claims could be more explicit. For example, the move from reduced construction material to investment in amenities needs a clearer explanation, and “Therefore, this allows staying within the budget” has an unclear reference. Use more precise links between cause and result, and make pronoun references unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “housing shortage,” “high rise buildings,” “sustainable living,” “amenities,” and “vertical housing.” These choices make the subject clear, and terms such as “integration” and “substantial amount” show an attempt to use more formal language. Some spelling and word-choice errors, however, reduce precision: “metropolitin,” “accomodate,” “effecient,” “mordern,” and “ammenities” are misspelled, while “modernized buildings” and “dream lifestyle” are not the most natural choices in this context. Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling; this will make your vocabulary more controlled without requiring unnecessarily complex words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional sentence (“Without proper management residents might find themselves…”) and a concession beginning “Although.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. In “high rise buildings can provide accomodate large number of people,” the verb construction and article use are faulty; “a great proportion of population” also needs an article or possessive. The sentence beginning “Although, high rise buildings…” has incorrect punctuation after the subordinating conjunction, and “Modernized and an affordable lifestyle being provided…” is not a complete sentence. Practise checking sentence completeness, articles, and verb patterns, while retaining the range of structures you already attempt.
