Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people belive that the best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartments blocks. I totally agree with this view because tall appartment blocks provide a afordable housing and can provide home for more people in small area of land.

Firstly, we have limited resource and land area so to fit big number of people in limited area, skyscraper and tall buildings are necessary to provide homes for as much people as possible. Not all country or place has large area of land and due to increase in rate of population in small area big appartment buildings is the only option to provide proper housing space. Another advantage is that, it is cheaper to build large colonies than to build small houses. The ratio of cost to people for housing is less in building apartments rather than individual homes. For an example, in China the government builds tall apartment blocks for people to accomodate its large population in its biggest chities because most of China terrain are either mountains or deserts which is unsuitable for living.

Moreover, in massive appartments, you can build and add more floors or remodel the appartments to make more space in furure if it is ever needed if the popuiation of city grew bigger. Its lot easier to build tall apartments than to control the population. Another thing is, because tall apartment blocks are build cheaper the cost for each flats are cheaper and affordable for middle class people as well. For an example, in india once there was a wave of cheap affordable apartments availability because of how much cheaply it was built. the stuctures were ready made and they just assemble it.

To conclude, because of cheap, affordability, cost to people ratio and limitred land area I think the best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly support tall apartment blocks, and you give relevant reasons concerning limited land, construction costs and affordability. The China and India examples also help connect your argument to real contexts. This addresses the task, but some points are more fully explained than others. For instance, the claim that apartments can be remodelled or extended to create more space is not clearly explained, and the India example about ready-made structures needs more detail to show how it supports your argument. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation of its impact on housing supply, and acknowledge briefly whether tall blocks have limitations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from land constraints to cost and affordability is generally understandable, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Moreover” and “To conclude” help identify stages of the argument. However, linking is sometimes mechanical, and several ideas are crowded together in long sentences. The second body paragraph shifts from adding floors to population control and then affordability without clearly showing how these points connect. Some references, such as “it” in “Its lot easier,” are also unclear. Use topic sentences to establish each paragraph’s main point, then organise supporting explanation and examples around it.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “limited resource,” “population,” “housing space,” “cost” and “affordable,” so the main ideas are usually understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, including “provide a home for more people,” “cost to people ratio” and “the structures were ready made.” Spelling errors such as “belive,” “appartment,” “accomodate” and “chities” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim to use more precise housing and urban-planning vocabulary, and check spelling and word forms carefully. For example, “accommodate a large population” is more natural than “accomodate its large population” with the current spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause beginning “because” and a conditional idea about future population growth. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles and verb forms sometimes make the reader pause. For example, “most of China terrain are” has problems with the possessive form and subject–verb agreement, while “if the population of city grew bigger” needs a clearer article and conditional tense. The sentence beginning “Moreover, in massive appartments” also becomes difficult to follow because several clauses are joined together. Practise building accurate complex sentences, and check agreement, articles and punctuation before submitting.
