Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this essay, I am going to argue about my opinion on the best way to provide enough homes in large cities. I largely disagree that because I firmly believe, if people don't stop migrating to cities, no number of apartments or flats are going to be useful to ensure sufficient homes.

Proponents argue that building tall apartment can help to provide enough flats but to me, it is actually a double-edged sword. It is true that more people can have accommodation through this way as the number of homes are going to be increased but on the flip side it is going to be significantly harmful for the environment. Also, even the tall apartments are going to have a limited number of flats but the number of people who are shifting to cities are not limited. As a result, there is no number of flat that can be determined as sufficient.

However, in my opinion, encouraging people to live in countryside is a better alternative. It is going to ensure that the cities are not congested, the betterment of environment and the economical growth. Nevertheless, most people want to be a resident of big cities as the amenities like schools and hospitals are easily accessable there. So, to encourage people to live in village, these advantages must needs to be provided there as well. Also, the rural places needs to be developed as much as possible so that the residents living there don't feel any difference in their lifestyle compared to the urban people.

In conclusion, modernisation of the villages can ensure that there are less people migrating to the large cities and eventually it can provide enough home there.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you largely disagree with relying on tall apartment blocks and argue instead for developing rural areas to reduce migration. You address the prompt and give relevant reasons, including environmental harm, continued urban migration, and the availability of services in cities. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that apartment construction is harmful to the environment would be stronger with a specific explanation or example, and the idea that rural development will provide enough homes needs a clearer link to housing demand in cities. Develop these points with concrete support and acknowledge more directly whether high-rise housing could still play a useful role alongside your alternative.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, the body paragraphs present the drawbacks of high-rise housing and your alternative, and the conclusion restates the main idea. Linking expressions such as “However,” “As a result,” and “Nevertheless” help show the relationships between points. At times, though, the progression is mechanical or the connection between ideas is not fully clear. The shift from environmental harm to the limited number of flats, for instance, would benefit from a more explicit explanation. The final paragraph also repeats the rural-development argument without adding a distinct concluding implication. Use clearer referencing and build each paragraph around a more developed sequence of claim, explanation, and example.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “accommodation,” “congested,” “amenities,” and “modernisation,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “double-edged sword,” although some phrasing is imprecise or unnatural: “argue about my opinion,” “the betterment of environment,” and “there is no number of flat that can be determined as sufficient.” Spelling errors such as “accessable” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating broad terms such as “people” and “enough homes.” For example, specify urban residents, housing demand, or rural infrastructure where appropriate, and check spelling during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“if people don't stop migrating”) and contrast clauses (“as the amenities…are easily…”). Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make relationships less clear. Examples include “building tall apartment” (plural noun needed), “the number of homes are going to be increased” (subject–verb agreement), and “the rural places needs” (agreement). In “I firmly believe, if…,” the punctuation and clause structure are also faulty. Work on agreement, articles and plural forms, and punctuate introductory clauses carefully. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control while preserving the variety you already attempt.
