Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people believe that constructing tall apartment buildings is the best way to provide enough housing in big cities. I completely agree with this view because high-rise blocks save limited land and can accommodate a large number of families easily.
The main reason is that tall apartment blocks can provide homes for a large number of people in small area. This is particularly important in big cities where the population is increasing rapidly and land is becoming more expensive. For example, a single high rise building can provide accommodation for hundred of families. As a result, more people can find suitable housing without using too much land.
Another important reason is that high-rise buildings make better use of available land, instead of constructing many small houses across a large area, governments can build apartments vertically and use the remaining land for hospitals and schools and parks. This can improve the quality of life for city residents. Therefore, tall apartments blocks are an effective solution to housing shortages in large cities.
In conclusion, I completely agree that building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide sufficient housing in large cities

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you completely agree that tall apartment blocks are the best solution. You give two relevant reasons—housing many families on limited land and freeing space for public facilities—and the example of one building accommodating many families supports the first point. However, the response addresses the task only partially because both reasons are asserted rather than fully explained, and the example is general rather than specific. The second point about hospitals, schools and parks could be developed by explaining how this land use benefits residents or comparing it with another housing approach. The response is also 59 words below the required minimum, which limits the opportunity to develop and support your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from limited land to the benefits of using remaining space is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “For example,” “As a result,” and “Therefore” help signal relationships between ideas. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some effective progression. To make the cohesion more flexible and precise, avoid relying mainly on explicit connectors and develop clearer links between claims and explanations. For instance, the second body paragraph moves from building vertically to listing public facilities without explaining the connection in detail. A more developed transition and explanation would strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “high-rise,” “accommodation,” “population,” “available land,” and “housing shortages.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and some phrases, such as “use the remaining land,” suit the topic. However, repetition of “tall apartment blocks,” “big cities,” and “provide” limits flexibility, while a few word-choice or form errors reduce accuracy: “tall apartments blocks” should be “tall apartment blocks,” and “hundred of families” should be “hundreds of families.” Aim to vary key terms with precise alternatives such as “residential towers” or “urban housing demand,” while checking collocations and plural forms. The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, but not yet consistently precise or varied.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled, including “This is particularly important in big cities where the population is increasing rapidly and land is becoming more expensive.” The conditional structure “instead of constructing many small houses … governments can build apartments vertically” also shows an attempt to express a more complex relationship. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain, though they do not prevent understanding. In “in small area,” an article is needed (“in a small area”); “for hundred of families” needs a plural form (“hundreds”); and the long sentence beginning “Another important reason” needs clearer punctuation, such as a full stop or semicolon after “large area.” Continue using varied structures while proofreading articles, plurals and sentence boundaries.
