Student answer (Band 4.0)

Due to the inclining population in urban areas, the residential buildings are needed to be developed efficiently. A group of people believe that having tall skyscrapers are a great way to accommmodate a large number of people in such regions. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the topic and gives a position: “I am in favor of this given assertion up to a great extent.” It also begins a relevant reason, namely the lack of space in urban areas. However, the answer stops before developing that reason, providing supporting examples, or considering the claim that tall apartment blocks are the best solution. The task therefore receives only minimal treatment, and the stated position is not explained. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, which leaves most of the question unanswered. To improve, complete the essay with developed reasons, specific examples, and a conclusion that clearly restates how far you agree.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introductory paragraph presents the topic and opinion, followed by “To begin with,” to introduce a supporting point. This gives the reader an initial sense of direction. However, the response ends during the opening of that first body paragraph (“the urban regions do”), so there is no completed development, progression across paragraphs, or conclusion. The linking phrase “the reasons of agreement will be illustrated in the forthcoming paragraphs” also promises a structure that the response does not deliver. Complete each paragraph around one clear idea, connect the explanation to the next point, and use a concluding paragraph to bring the argument together.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “population,” “urban areas,” “residential buildings,” and “accommodate,” and attempts more formal phrasing such as “given assertion.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise: “inclining population” would be better expressed as “growing population,” and “the residential buildings are needed to be developed efficiently” is awkward. “Tall skyscrapers” is also less precise than “high-rise apartment blocks” for this question. The misspelling “accommmodate” further reduces accuracy. The limited amount of writing makes it difficult to demonstrate a broader range. Aim for natural collocations and precise terms related to housing and urban planning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts complex sentence structures, particularly in the opening sentence and the clause beginning “due to having a lack of space.” Some grammatical control is evident, and the main position can be understood. However, errors and awkward constructions occur in key sentences. In “having tall skyscrapers are a great way,” the subject and verb do not agree; “having” is singular, or the sentence could be recast as “tall skyscrapers are a great way.” The phrase “buildings are needed to be developed” also uses an incorrect passive pattern; write “more residential buildings need to be developed.” Because the response is very short and ends mid-sentence, there is little evidence of sustained control or a wider range of structures. Check agreement and passive constructions, and complete sentences before submitting.
