Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays the population is increasing drastically and to accommodate people in homes is a major issue, there are many way to overcome this problem. It is argued that the best way is to enough homes in large cities is by building tall apartment block. I partially agree with this solution.

The major benefit of this solution is that by building tall apartments, large amount of people can be facilitate in the small space without spreading cities outward. In addition it is environment friendly due to less exploitation to natural land and forests. For instance, by providing homes to people in vertical apartment reduces the cost of building vast sewage system and road network, which is necessary if houses are build outward and it also save forests.

On the other hand, there are some drawbacks of tall apartment block which can be serious. To illustrate my point, when people live in a narrow vertical building they can face health issues caused by low sunlight exposure as there is almost not open space in tall apartemnts. Secondly, it affect the growth of children because there is no place and parks for children to play.

In conclusion, there are benefits of providing homes in large cities by building vertical apartments as it reduce cost for building infrastucture that is necessary for building the homes horizentally to connect it to main urban centre. However, drawback of tall building are less space for residents and no parks for childrens to play outside. So, in my view, in some cases building tall apartments is more viable.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the question and give a clear, qualified position: “I partially agree,” with the conclusion explaining that tall apartments are viable “in some cases.” The response presents relevant advantages—using less land and reducing infrastructure costs—and disadvantages, including limited sunlight and play space. These points support your position, but some are not fully explained. For example, the health concern is asserted without clarifying how building design or residents’ circumstances cause it, and the children’s needs are mentioned briefly. The example about sewage systems and roads is relevant, though its connection to the main claim could be made more explicit. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation or a specific example, and state more precisely when high-rise housing is preferable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on benefits, a paragraph on drawbacks, and a conclusion. The contrast between “The major benefit” and “On the other hand” helps readers follow the argument, and the conclusion returns to your qualified position. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, relying on signposts such as “For instance” and “To illustrate my point” rather than showing the relationship between ideas in more detail. Some references are also unclear: “it” in the infrastructure example could refer to the apartment approach or the building process, while “it” in “it affect the growth” has no clear grammatical antecedent. Link explanations more explicitly and use precise references so the argument flows smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “accommodate,” “exploitation,” “natural land,” “sewage system,” and “urban centre.” These choices show an attempt to discuss housing and city planning beyond basic terms. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the phrasing awkward: “facilitate” does not mean provide housing, “environment friendly” needs a more natural form, and “horizontal” is used where “outward” or “low-rise” would fit. There are also spelling errors such as “apartemnts,” “infrastucture,” and “horizentally.” Build precision by learning common housing collocations and checking spelling and word forms; this will make your ideas clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure (“if houses are build outward”) and a contrastive sentence beginning “However.” Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, the opening sentence joins two independent clauses with a comma, and subject–verb agreement is inaccurate in “it affect” and “it also save.” There are also errors with articles, plurals, and verb forms, as in “a narrow vertical building,” “there is no place and parks,” and “houses are build.” These are some errors that do not usually prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy. Practise agreement, passive forms, and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
