Student answer (Band 6.5)

In order to accomodate more families and inviduals in a smaller land space, tall appartment blocks are the best solution in urban areas. I strongly agree that the tall communal buildings have alot of benefits, although this holds true only when the downsides are carefully considered.

The main advantage of tall buildings is that it opens doors to accomodate larger sum of individuals in a smaller land area as compared to horizontally aligning homes, which would take a lot of excessive space, that could be used in better options like parks, resturants or even fitness centre's. Furrthermore, it also encourages a sense of social responsibilities within families, such as, looking out for your neighbours and helping them in the time of need. Also, it allows the families to stay connected to each other, which could result in better networking such as, providing a reccomendation for jobs. Aditionally, tall buildings can allow spacious parking for vehicles, which can eventually reduce the traffic congestion in enourmous cities by the cars being parked within the building instead of the curb side.

Admittedly, although constructing tall apartments is a better idea, it comes with its own drawbacks as well, such as, the lack of privacy within families, which can sometimes irrirate and lead to arguments between them or even the constant loud noises which can sometimes be really disturbing. However, such outcomes can be tackled by the government bodies by imposing new rules and in case of a rule break, imposing heavy fines, which will eventually eliminate the loud noises and would allow more privacy.

In conclusion, constructing tall apartment blocks are a better option and can result in accomodating of more people in smaller spaces. With some rules and regulations to avoid the disadvantages, tall buildings can positively impact a countries economy and environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you strongly support tall apartment blocks, while acknowledging that their disadvantages need to be managed. You address the central issue by comparing high-rise housing with homes spread across more land, and you give relevant supporting points, including preserving space for parks and reducing curbside parking. This meets the task well. However, some supporting ideas are less fully explained: the claims that apartment living builds social responsibility and improves job networking are asserted rather than illustrated, and the discussion of noise and privacy focuses on rules without showing how these measures would work in practice. To strengthen the response further, develop the most relevant reasons with a specific example and explain more directly why high-rise construction is the best way to provide enough homes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: it introduces your position, presents advantages, considers drawbacks, and concludes. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “Admittedly,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The ideas within the main body are generally ordered sensibly, moving from land use to community benefits and parking. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, with repeated “also” and “such as,” and the long advantages paragraph groups several distinct points together. A few references, such as “such outcomes,” could be more precise about which drawbacks they refer to. For stronger cohesion, vary the transitions, separate or group related supporting points more deliberately, and use clearer references between claims and explanations.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “urban areas,” “land area,” “traffic congestion,” “privacy,” and “imposing heavy fines.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and there are attempts at more formal phrasing. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural collocations are noticeable, including “accomodate,” “appartment,” “a larger sum of individuals,” and “horizontally aligning homes.” Some expressions, such as “opens doors” and “better options,” are vague or informal for this argument. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and control. Aim to learn accurate topic-specific combinations, such as “accommodate a larger population” and “low-rise housing,” and proofread carefully for spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession introduced by “although” and clauses explaining possible consequences. Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the argument remains easy to follow. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction. For example, “the main advantage … is that it opens doors” shifts from plural “buildings” to singular “it,” while “constructing tall apartment blocks are” has a similar agreement problem. The phrase “a countries economy” also needs a possessive form. Several sentences are long and contain multiple ideas, making punctuation and structure less controlled. Review agreement and possessives, and divide lengthy sentences where needed.
