Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 2.5
The response makes a limited attempt to address the topic, but it does not establish a clear position on whether tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide homes. The opening repeats the statement, then refers vaguely to “facts” without presenting a definite view. The body paragraphs mention technology and its possible benefits and drawbacks, but these points are not connected clearly to housing supply, city space, affordability, or alternative housing. The conclusion calls the issue a “mixed bag” and says a decision is “impossible,” so the question remains unanswered. The response is also 27 words below the 250-word minimum; the 32 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. To improve, state your position and support it with relevant, specific reasons and examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has a recognisable essay shape, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “To begin with” and “On the contrary,” and a conclusion. These markers show an attempt to organise the discussion. However, the ideas do not progress logically: the first body paragraph shifts from apartment blocks to technology generally, while the second refers to technology’s “loopholes” without explaining how these relate to housing. Some sentences are fragments, such as “Making human life easier and more comfortable,” and connections between claims are unclear. The conclusion repeats the prompt rather than drawing together the argument. Build each paragraph around one relevant point, explain it, and use linking phrases only where they accurately show the relationship between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response attempts some topic-related and evaluative vocabulary, including “modern blocks,” “benefits,” “negative impacts,” and “positive and negatives.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unclear, which makes the argument difficult to follow. Examples include “citis,” “taal to apartment blocks,” “facts to this purposal,” and “science and modern apartment block in citis.” There are also spelling and word-form problems, such as “purposal” and “various field.” Some phrases, including “It is interesting essay,” do not communicate a clear point. Aim for precise housing vocabulary and check spelling and collocations; for example, distinguish between “high-rise apartments,” “housing supply,” and “urban density” rather than relying on general references to technology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to use both simple and more extended sentence forms, including “Although” is not used, but clauses are introduced with phrases such as “For instance” and “Moreover.” However, sentence boundaries and basic grammatical patterns are often inaccurate. The opening has a stray full stop after “whether,” and “Over the year society have developed” has a subject–verb agreement problem. “Making human life easier and more comfortable” is a fragment, while “They would be to facts” does not form a grammatical clause. Articles, plurals, and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “modern apartment block” and the spaces before commas. Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
