Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some argued that the best method to overcome insufficient homes problem in large cities is to develop tall apartment blocks. In this essay, I partly agree with this statement, as it can bring positive outcomes while buidling them; as compared to building individual homes, apartment blocks saves more space in the city. However, the negative part to this is that the external cost is expensive.

To begin with, the agreement to this comes down to the space availabilty. Large cities are commonly known to have tall skyscrapers surrounding them, hence, the availability for large spaces is limited to provide homes to society. Nonetheless, the development of apartment blocks prevent this problem as it can accomodate a large number of people. For instance, Malaysia has introduced many tall apartment blocks specifically in Kuala Lumpur, to provide a comfortable place to call a home to numerous people. This has also resulted in a lower amount of rates in poverty after this was introduced.

In contrast, the downside of this is the external cost. With expensive materials used, this would be a big problem if the expenses are too much to cover. Although some would say using cheaper materials would be a solution, however, the development is issued to be built in a city, therefore, high quality appearence is key to promote people to live comfortably with new accomadations introduced. Hence, this would definitely create an expense issue and therefore are unable to continue the building process.

In conclusion, I believe that the idea can cater many people to live comfortably with apartments introduced with more homes can be built due to the save spaced. However, this would be very expensive to build as the quality of homes are much important to satisfy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is identifiable: you partly agree because apartment blocks use limited urban space efficiently, while their construction costs can be high. Both sides are relevant, and the Kuala Lumpur example gives the first argument some support. However, the response only partially develops the task: the cost argument is asserted rather than explained with specific consequences or evidence, and the example’s claim that poverty rates fell is not clearly linked to apartment construction. The conclusion repeats the two points but does not clarify how the benefits and costs lead to your qualified position. To strengthen the response, explain when the space-saving benefit outweighs the expense and support each main idea with a more precise example or reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the benefit and drawback, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “In contrast,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. This provides a sound foundation, and the main ideas are generally grouped appropriately. To make the organisation more flexible and cohesive, reduce formulaic transitions and improve links between claims and explanations. For example, the poverty-rate statement follows the Kuala Lumpur example without showing how one caused the other. In the final paragraph, “with apartments introduced with more homes can be built” is difficult to follow; state the relationship between apartment construction and increased housing supply more directly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “apartment blocks,” “availability,” “external cost,” and “high quality,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “accommodate a large number of people.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “insufficient homes problem,” “the external cost is expensive,” and “save spaced.” Spelling errors such as “buidling,” “availabilty,” and “accomadations” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise housing and construction terms, and check spelling and natural word combinations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, using structures such as “as compared to building individual homes” and “Although some would say…”. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and agreement are frequent enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “apartment blocks saves more space” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the development of apartment blocks prevent this problem” has the same issue. The sentence beginning “Although some would say…” also combines “although” with “however” unnecessarily, and “therefore are unable to continue” lacks a clear subject. Practise checking each sentence for a complete subject and verb, agreement, and clear clause connections.
