Student answer (Band 6.0)

People often say that the most optimal mean to provide sufficiant homes in big cities is by constructing tall apartment blocks. I totally agree with this concept. In this growing world's population, it is very challanging to accomodate huge number of residents in a city with their own houses due to a constrain of having limited land available. It is also equally important to preserve the trees and parks in the city for a better environment.

As the world population keeps on growing day by day and people wanting to live in the metropoliten cities due to great opportunities available to them in that city it has become a challange to provide enough homes. Since, the big cities have a large number of residents willing to live, it is better to build the tall buildings in order to provide home for hundreds of people rather than a single family living on the same covered area. For example, a building with 7 floors and 20 apartments in it can accomodate around 100 people in the 2200 square feet area. In contrast, a family of 5 members owning a same covered land, with a single home.

The number of vehicles are directly proportional to the number of residents in a city. Therefore, to prevent the environmental pollution it is an essential need of a city to have lots of trees and parks which can help reduce the global warming effect. If tall apartment blocks are built ultimately we would not need to cut down the trees or demolish the parks to make room for more residential areas. In my country I can easily compare between the two big cities Lahore and Islamabad as an example. Islamabad is a pre-planned city with lots of tall apartment blocks providing home to many people and it also preserves the tress and parks which ultimately makes it a bit cold city compared to Lahore where there are almost not trees and parks available except of homes.

I agree with this because it is an essential need of the growing population and the due to the environmental damage happening in our big cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I totally agree”) and remains consistent. You address the housing issue by comparing apartments with single-family homes, and you add a second relevant reason: preserving trees and parks. The example of a seven-floor building helps illustrate how many residents can be housed on a limited area, while the Lahore–Islamabad comparison supports your environmental point. This covers the task well, but the support is uneven: the population-density argument is more concrete than the environmental comparison, which relies on broad claims about the cities and does not explain the role of apartment blocks in detail. Develop that example with specific, carefully qualified evidence and explain why high-rise housing is the best option compared with alternatives.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from limited land to environmental preservation is logical, and signposts such as “For example,” “In contrast,” and “Therefore” help readers follow the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening of the second body paragraph repeats the population-growth point, and “In contrast” introduces a fragment rather than a complete comparison. The final sentence also repeats the agreement without drawing the two reasons together. Use clearer referencing and transitions, and make each paragraph advance the argument rather than restating earlier points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “apartment blocks,” “limited land,” “residents,” “environmental pollution,” and “global warming,” so the main ideas are generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “preserve” and “pre-planned.” However, inaccurate spelling and word choice are noticeable, including “sufficiant,” “challanging,” “accomodate,” and “metropoliten.” Some combinations are also unnatural: “most optimal mean,” “provide home,” and “a bit cold city.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Focus on accurate spelling and common collocations, and choose simpler, reliable expressions when unsure rather than forcing formal-sounding phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a conditional-style explanation with “If tall apartment blocks are built” and a comparison between apartment living and a single-family home. The main message remains understandable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or difficult to control. For example, “In contrast, a family of 5 members owning a same covered land, with a single home” is a fragment, while the opening sentence of the second paragraph runs together several ideas without clear clause boundaries. There are also errors in agreement and articles, as in “The number of vehicles are” and “with their own houses.” Practise complete comparative sentences and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation in longer sentences.
