Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believe that to accomodate the people living in large urban cities, the best way is by building more tall apartments. I agree with this statement because in large cities, it's common to see things like metros or various attractions being built so it's not enough space to build a house for each person living there. Also it's more hassle for the new immigrants to find a suitable house than just living in an apartment.

In large urban cities, a lot of people have to be accomodated. When there's already a number of things being built like public metro stations, monuments and attractions in these rapidly developing cities, the space left for housing is less. In such a case, I believe that building tall apartments can provide enough homes to people. For example, in Dubai, where there's so many tourist attractions being built around, the city has built a lot of apartments to accomodate residents and tourists.

Another reason why I believe that building apartments is better is that there will be people coming to work from different regions to these large cities. At the very beginning, it can be a hassle for them to build new homes or find a suitable one to live in. These people would find staying in rented apartments easier as it also provides them with a community. For example, in India, most of the people live in rented or bought apartments as it's convinient to their lifestyle. They can also have a community in which they can socialise.

In conclusion, building tall apartment blocks in large cities seems like the most efficient way to provide enough homes to people new to these cities as they could find a community and also a great way to accomodate more people in less space.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that tall apartment blocks are an effective way to house people in large cities. You give two relevant reasons—limited land because of urban development, and the convenience of rented apartments for people moving for work—and support them with examples from Dubai and India. This addresses the task, but the discussion is not equally developed throughout. The Dubai example illustrates apartment construction, while the India example mainly describes apartment living and community, rather than showing why tall blocks are the best way to provide enough homes. The claim that newcomers would otherwise need to build homes also needs clarification. Explain the advantages and limitations of high-rise housing more directly, and develop each example to show how it supports your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. The progression from limited space to the needs of newcomers is easy to follow, and examples are placed alongside the relevant points. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “Also” introduces a second reason in the opening, but the relationship between immigration and the need for tall blocks is not fully explained. The repeated use of “In large urban cities” and “For example” also makes the linking somewhat predictable. Use clearer references to connect each example to the claim, and make the conclusion synthesise the two reasons rather than repeating them in similar terms.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “rapidly developing,” “public metro stations,” “rented apartments,” and “community,” which helps communicate the topic. However, several choices are imprecise or repetitive, particularly repeated forms of “accommodate” and “apartment.” Some collocations are unnatural: “large urban cities” is redundant, “build a house for each person” is an imprecise description of housing demand, and “a hassle for them to build new homes” does not express the likely difficulty of finding accommodation clearly. There are also spelling errors, including “accomodate,” “convinient,” and “socialise” is acceptable in British English, but spelling should be consistent. Aim for more precise housing and urban-planning terms and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “When there’s already a number of things being built…” and “as it also provides them with a community.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions reduce accuracy. For example, “there’s already a number of things” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “where there’s so many tourist attractions” repeats this issue. The opening phrase “the best way is by building” is also awkwardly formed, while “a great way to accommodate more people” in the conclusion does not connect smoothly to the preceding clause. Review agreement with plural nouns and build more controlled sentence structures; punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally understandable.
