The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often believed that constructing taller apartment blocks is an efficient way to accomodate larger populations in urban cities. As the population is increasing day by day , accomodation is becoming questionable because of the availability of the land in urban cities. In this situation builiding taller apartments is a resonable solution as more people can fit in the smaller spaces. Therefore, I agree with the given statement.
As the cities are expanding and becoming the hub of industrialization, increasing number of people are considering settling in urban cities which is in turn rising the demands of building high-rise apartments. Taller apartments have certain benefits, one of them is that it can accomodate more number of people while using less ground space. The New York City can be considered as prime example, the citys land area is confined, therefor for living , the construction companies have started buillding taller appartments. These apartments are considered to impose lower pressure on land as compared it with the larger houses that are present in certain parts of California.
Moreover, these mulistore building can provide some phenomenal views of the city as they are situated at a very higher altitude. However, the sizes of the appartments are very questionable , as they have to build number of the houses in a single apartmental setting. The quality of the construction can also be degraded as the focus will be on quantity rather than providing a quality.
In conclusion, there is a need to build highrise apartments taking the increasing population into consideration as they are the viable solution to the urbanization and accomodating larger masses into a smaller land area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction (“I agree with the given statement”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You give relevant reasons for building upwards, especially the efficient use of limited land, and the New York example helps illustrate this point. You also acknowledge drawbacks, including smaller apartments and possible effects on construction quality, so the response considers more than one aspect of the issue. However, these concerns are only briefly stated and are not weighed against your main argument. The New York comparison with California is also not fully explained, and the response could address more directly why tall blocks are the best way to provide enough homes, rather than simply a viable solution. Develop and support these points more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from the need for housing, to the advantages of high-rise buildings, and then to some disadvantages. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “However” and “In conclusion” help signal these stages. At times, though, the connections between ideas are abrupt or unclear. For example, the shift from city views to apartment size does not explain how the point about views relates to providing enough homes. The New York and California comparison is also difficult to follow because the relationship between the examples is not made explicit. Use clearer referencing and explain how each example supports the paragraph’s main point; avoid relying mainly on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “urbanization,” “high-rise apartments,” “land area” and “construction quality,” which allows you to discuss housing and city growth. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “viable solution” and “impose lower pressure on land.” However, several spelling errors and inaccurate word choices reduce precision, including “accomodate,” “builiding,” “resonable” and “appartmental.” Some combinations are unnatural or unclear, such as “the demands of building high-rise apartments” and “lower pressure on land.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, for example, “demand for housing” and “reduce pressure on available land.” This would make your vocabulary more controlled and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “As the cities are expanding…” and a contrast structure beginning “However.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “increasing number of people” needs an article or plural form, and “one of them is that it can accommodate” has an unclear reference and number agreement. The sentence about New York joins several ideas with commas, making the relationships between them difficult to follow. There are also issues with articles and sentence construction in “as compared it with the larger houses.” Work on agreement, articles and complete sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex structures accurately.
