Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is often argued that constructing high rise apartment building is the most effective solution to the housing shortage in the major cities. i largely agree the view although recognize that tall buildings have some drawbacks.
On the one hand, tall apartment block of the most way of accommodate a growing urban population. In the large cities, land is extremely limit and expensive so buildings vertically allows many families to live on a small foot print. For example in cities like Tokyo and New York, sky scrapers house thousand of people where only a few houses could be built other wise. This is not only provides more homes but also prevent cities from sprawing in to surrounding agriculture land.Futhermore, high density living makes it government to provide public transport , school, and health care efficiently.
On the other hand, while tall building solve the quality of life issues if not planned well. Living in over crowded high rises can lead lack of privacy , noise, and limit green space, which make mantle health. However, these problems can be mitigated through good design, such as including parks , playground, and community facilites within the apartment complex. Therefore, the benefits of providing affordable housing for the many people outweigh these disadvantages.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that building tall apartment blocks is the best method of provide suffcient housing in the large cities. Although high rise living has some social drawback, its advantages in terms of land efficient and sustainability make it the most practical solution to urban housings shortages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear from the introduction (“I largely agree”) through to the conclusion, and you address both the benefits and drawbacks of tall apartment blocks. The points about limited urban land, housing more people vertically, and making public services easier to provide are relevant and supported with examples such as Tokyo and New York. You also acknowledge concerns about privacy, noise, and green space, then explain how design could reduce them. This gives the response a clear, developed argument. To strengthen it further, explain some claims more precisely: for instance, clarify how high-density housing makes public transport and services more efficient, and develop the drawbacks beyond listing them. Avoid broad claims such as calling this the “best method” without comparing it with alternatives.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression from the advantages of high-rise housing to its possible disadvantages is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. However, cohesion is not consistently smooth: “while tall building solve the quality of life issues if not planned well” does not clearly connect the contrast, and “Therefore” appears to draw a conclusion from the design solution without fully clarifying the reasoning. Use clearer links between claims and explanations, and ensure each paragraph develops one central point in a logical sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “housing shortage,” “high density living,” “privacy,” “green space,” and “sustainability.” These choices make the subject clear, and attempts at more specific language show awareness of the topic. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations sometimes reduce precision: examples include “land is extremely limit,” “sprawing,” “mantle health,” and “land efficient.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “the most way of accommodate” and “urban housings shortages.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your main argument, but they limit the flexibility and accuracy of your vocabulary. Focus on learning common word partnerships and checking spelling and word forms when revising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional idea (“if not planned well”) and a relative clause (“which make…”). The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven, and several errors affect sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb forms. For example, “I largely agree the view” needs a preposition, while “This is not only provides” combines incompatible verb structures. “Tall building solve” and “which make” also show agreement problems, and the sentence beginning “while tall building solve…” is incomplete. Improve accuracy by checking subject–verb agreement, articles and plurals, and by ensuring each sentence has a complete main clause. Practising complex sentences with accurate clause structure will help you express the argument more clearly.
