Student answer (Band 6.0)

Building tall apartment blocks in large cities is an excellent way to provide enough houses. I strongly agree with this statement because apartments take up less area and are usually cheaper than houses. Constructing apartment buildings instead of building multiple houses is also good for the environment.

Tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide enough homes in large cities because they require less area and cost less than the individual houses built for each family. Multiple families can live in the same building. They can look out for each other easily, which means that the apartments are much safer. For example, people who move to larger cities in search of better opportunities often can't afford to live in individual houses and usually require small bedroom apartments to stay beacuse apartments are usually cheaper and safer in terms of security.

Moreover the construction of apartment buildings is better for the environment. Building new houses may often require cutting down trees which may negatively affect the cities's atmosphere. So building tall apartment blocks is environmental friendly and can help decrease deforestation being done to build new homes. For example, Lahore is known as the "city of gardens" but in recent years, alot of trees have been cut down to construct new housing societies. This is one of the main reasons of Lahore becoming one of the most polluted cities in the world with an alarmningly high air index.

In conclusion, the construction of tall apartment blocks is surely the best way to provide enough homes in large cities because they take up less area and are much better for the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly support tall apartment blocks, and you give relevant reasons about land use, affordability and environmental impact. The Lahore example also helps connect the environmental point to a real urban context. This meets the task well, and the response shows some of the stronger development expected at the next level. However, the affordability and safety points are not fully separated or explained: the claim that residents can “look out for each other” needs a clearer link to apartment living, and the example of people seeking opportunities mainly repeats that apartments are cheaper and safer. Develop each reason with a more specific explanation or evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present supporting reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. “Moreover” signals the move to the environmental argument, while “For example” introduces supporting detail. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. In the first body paragraph, the shift from lower cost to residents looking out for one another introduces safety without explaining how this follows from the main point. The environmental paragraph also moves quickly from tree removal to pollution. Use clearer cause-and-effect links and develop each paragraph around one central reason. More precise referencing would also help readers follow what “they” and “this” refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “apartment blocks,” “deforestation,” “housing societies” and “air index.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “individual houses” and “better opportunities.” However, the range is somewhat repetitive: “build,” “building,” “houses” and “apartments” recur frequently, and some combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “environmental friendly” and “air index” in this context. Spelling slips such as “beacuse,” “alot” and “alarmningly” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated terms—for example, use “high-rise housing” or “residential development” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because they require less area” and a relative clause in “people who move to larger cities.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “require small bedroom apartments to stay,” the article and plural form need attention; “the cities's atmosphere” has an incorrect possessive form; and “deforestation being done” is an awkward passive construction. The sentence beginning “For example, people who move…” is also long and would be clearer if divided or punctuated more carefully. Practise accurate articles, possessives and clause construction while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
