Student answer (Band 6.0)
I do not agree to the statement that the best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. Here are my reasons; Tall apartment have not been shown to adequately provide homes for people, instead they have caused soaring rent prices, building tall houses requires a lot of infrastructure which might not necessarily be affordable, also, not everyone appreciates living in tall apartments.
Firstly, building tall buildings have not been shown to adequately provide homes for people as it comes with it soaring rent price, this makes it expensive for lower to middle class people living in the city. As a student who had to live outside the school hostel, I could not afford to live in tall apartments through out my university. This begs the question of how can it provide homes if majority of people cannot afford it.
Secondly, building tall apartment requires a lot of infrastructure, planning, building and time. This is expensive and time consuming than building average houses. There are scenerios where, by the time the apartment is completed, people are not available to purchase them. There have also been scenerios where, people lost interest after waiting for a long time to purchase these apartments.
Thirdly, not everybody appreciates living in tall apartments. For me, I would prefer living in a bungalow surrounded by my garden, the earth and forest. I would like to avoid taking an elevator to my room and have one or two neighbors to wave at each day. A tall apartment on the other hand, makes this impossible. In a tall apartment, you would have to take an elevator to your room, which is in the middle of the earth and clouds, you would have to see a lot of neighbors in the elevator before entering your room. That is not an ideal home I would want to have.
Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the opening: you disagree that tall apartment blocks are the best solution, and you give three relevant reasons concerning affordability, construction costs and time, and personal preferences. The personal example about being unable to afford an apartment while studying helps make the affordability point concrete. However, some claims need fuller explanation or stronger support. For instance, the suggestion that completed apartments may have no buyers is not clearly connected to why they fail to provide enough homes, and the preference for a bungalow is mainly personal rather than evidence about city housing needs. Develop each reason by explaining its wider effect on housing supply and briefly acknowledge possible benefits of building upwards before qualifying your position. (The response meets the task’s length requirement; 16 words copied from the prompt were excluded.)
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, three body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the ideas follow a generally logical order. Signposting such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Thirdly” makes the progression easy to follow. However, the linking can feel mechanical, and some connections between claims are not fully explained. For example, the paragraph about construction time moves from expense to apartments being unavailable for purchase without showing how this affects the number of homes provided. The final paragraph also repeats the elevator point. Use more varied transitions and make the relationship between each claim and your main argument explicit; clearer referencing and less repetition would make the essay flow more smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including relevant terms such as “infrastructure,” “affordable,” and “time consuming.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “lower to middle class people.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “soaring rent price” would be more natural as “soaring rents,” while “tall houses” and “average houses” do not clearly describe the alternatives to apartment blocks. “Scenerios” is misspelled, and “through out” should be written as one word. The repeated use of “tall apartment(s)” also limits variety. Build a more precise range for discussing housing, costs, and urban development, and check spelling and common word combinations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the argument remains understandable. For example, the sentence beginning “As a student who had to live outside the school hostel” adds a relevant subordinate clause. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “Tall apartment have not been shown,” the plural noun needs a plural form; “building tall buildings have not been shown” also has a subject–verb agreement problem. The opening uses a semicolon where a full stop or colon would be clearer, and “how can it provide homes if majority of people cannot afford it” needs more accurate question structure and an article before “majority.” Review agreement, articles, and punctuation, while continuing to practise complex sentences with controlled clause structure.
