IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that huge residential buildings can offer sufficient appartments for living in big cities. I strongly agree with this view because they can provide hundreds of flats on a small area of land and can accomodate many people.
The main reason is that the construction of appartmental buildings requires little space of the town. This is because buildings are made in vertical positions with multiple floors inside. For example, Burj Khalifa is considered the tallest building that is ever made and has approximately 120 floors inside, but it took only few acres of area for construction. In addition, in larger cities, the residential area is insufficient because the land is divided into giant road networks, huge industrial factories, and big shopping malls etc. Therefore, buildings are beneficial, requires less area for construction, and are useful to save space on land.
Another reason is that buildings can facilitate large number of individuals. In other words, seperate houses are required large area for construction and offers less number number of people to live. For instance, a single story house offers less than ten people to live but a building holding the same area allows thousands of citizens to live. As a result, cities with small land can manage the residents and can welcome the people who come from other cities for better employment opportunities and enjoy modern lifestyle.
In conclusion, I agree with making buildings in big cities because they requires tiny area of the land and offers more people to live.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction—“I strongly agree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You give two relevant reasons: tall buildings use less land and can house more people, and you support these with examples such as the Burj Khalifa and a comparison with a single-storey house. This addresses the task and provides a sound basis for your view. However, some support is general or not fully explained: the Burj Khalifa example shows height and limited land use, but does not establish how ordinary residential blocks could meet housing needs. Develop the practical implications further, such as affordability, infrastructure, or the suitability of high-rise living, to make the argument more fully extended.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from land efficiency to housing capacity is logical, and signposts such as “The main reason,” “In addition,” and “Another reason” help readers follow the argument. Some linking is mechanical, however, and the repeated use of “buildings” and “area” makes connections between points less smooth. In the second body paragraph, the comparison between separate houses and a building is understandable, but the relationship between the example and the claim about welcoming newcomers could be made more explicit. Use a wider range of referencing and transitions, and ensure each example is clearly tied back to the paragraph’s main point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “residential buildings,” “construction,” “industrial factories,” and “employment opportunities.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “vertical positions” and “residential area,” though some combinations are unnatural or imprecise. Noticeable spelling errors include “appartments,” “accomodate,” and “seperate,” while phrases such as “offers less number number of people” and “tiny area of the land” show limited control of collocation and expression. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Build a bank of accurate housing and urban-planning collocations, and proofread spelling and repeated words before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including explanations with “This is because” and a relative clause in “the tallest building that is ever made.” Most ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “buildings are beneficial, requires less area” shifts from a plural subject to a singular verb, while “they requires” and “offers” in the conclusion also fail to agree with the plural subject. The sentence “separate houses are required large area” is missing a grammatical link, and “only few acres” needs an article. These patterns show that complex ideas are being attempted, but control is not yet consistent. Check subject–verb agreement and article use, and revise sentences aloud for completeness.
