Student answer (Band 5.5)

it is often a debatable topic to have independent house or to build tall apartments in larger cities.i believe building apartments is a good idea though it has some disadvantages lets discuss them here.

nowadays, in larger cities to avoid traffic and congestion people are preferring to build apartments rather choosing individual homes. as it occupies more space which can cause congestion. we have plenty of designs where we get all the aminities in the apartment like gym, shopping complex, grocery store and also hospital and the rooms are spacious and designed as per the customer needs. it is also secured for people who have children. apartments are quite affordable compared to individual homes and they are ready to move without any delay or efforts to put in.

as mentioned there are few disadvantages of living in the apartment is, we cannot have the individuality. people have to follow the community rules despite of the interest and also the main concern is some of the flats miss the sunrise to enjoy the nature. sometimes water scarcity arises in apartments. i recently have been to my friends apartment for her birthday we planned many games to chill unfortunately we cannot have music as it caused distubance to the neighbors. if we are in independent house we can have our own time but in the apartments it is not possible. also they wont allow visitors frequently.

overall i totally agree having to build apartments in metropolitan cities to save space, time and also money. it is the best way to adapt the modern culture and have simple and afer living.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that apartment blocks are a good way to provide homes in large cities, and you acknowledge disadvantages before reaffirming your view. The points about using less space, affordability, security and shared facilities are relevant, while the birthday example gives a personal illustration of limits on noise and visitors. This addresses the task and shows some development, but the response focuses more on the advantages and inconveniences of apartment living than on how tall blocks specifically provide enough homes. Some claims, such as reducing traffic and offering spacious rooms, are asserted rather than explained. To strengthen the response, explain the housing-capacity benefit directly and support key claims with clearer reasoning or a more specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on advantages, one on disadvantages, and a concluding opinion. The progression from benefits to drawbacks is easy to follow, and phrases such as “as mentioned” and “overall” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some linking is mechanical, and the long middle paragraphs contain several points joined together without clear internal organisation. The opening also promises to discuss disadvantages, although the main body first presents advantages. Use topic sentences to establish each paragraph’s focus, divide related ideas into clearer units, and use referencing and transitions more precisely so the connections between claims are easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “congestion,” “community rules,” “water scarcity,” and “individuality.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or informal, which makes the writing less precise. For example, “avoid traffic” does not clearly explain how apartment construction reduces congestion, “miss the sunrise” is an awkward way to describe limited access to sunlight, and “simple and afer living” is unclear. Spelling errors such as “aminities” and “distubance” also affect accuracy. Build a more precise vocabulary for housing and urban planning, and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional idea in “if we are in independent house we can have our own time.” The main message is generally understandable, but errors occur across sentence boundaries, articles, agreement and verb forms. For instance, “it is often a debatable topic to have independent house” needs clearer sentence construction and an article, while “there are few disadvantages … is” has a subject–verb mismatch. Several sentences run together, such as the opening and the sentence beginning “nowadays,” and punctuation and capitalisation are inconsistent. Practise building accurate complex sentences, checking singular and plural agreement, and separating complete ideas with appropriate punctuation.
