Student answer (Band 6.0)

The most appropriate plan to ensure adequate homes in big towns is to construct mega apartment blocks. I personally stand in contrast to this statement to a large extent and there are plenty of reasons for my point of view.

Firstly, if we consider the merit of building tall apartment blocks, the foremost benefit would be the accomodation of a large number of people in a single building. This approach could save a lot of space which is the major problem of large cities. Furthermore, the provision of services would be much easier as we have designated areas of interests. The business will be easier to establish knowing what particular set of individuals live in a certain block. However, it is easier said than done. This solution comes with its own problems such as, the poor lifestyle where any apartment owner does not have a freedom of doing things according to its taste. One of such example is the restriction on using balcony for the plants. This rule is strictly applied at all large buildings. So, if you are a nature lover thats not a good option for you.

In contrast, people living in seperate houses enjoy the freedom of their life. The services may not be as accesible as in tall buildings but the peace of mind worth much more than that. Moreover, houses can be designed to a person's own needs and it does not have to follow a particular set of instructions set by the government. You can grow plants, enjoy sunlight in your garden or go for a quick swimming session in your personal pool. Also, the life is less mechanical in this particular routine. I personally experienced this back in my university days. I had to live in a tall building sharing a room with my classmate. It made me realize the true value of an isolated house.

In conclusion, it is stated that the best way to provide enough homes in huge cities is to construct large apartment blocks, to which I stand in contrast with because the freedom and the true diversity of the life will be lost.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you disagree to a large extent, and you acknowledge the space-saving and service-delivery benefits of tall blocks before explaining concerns about restrictions and privacy. The examples of balcony use, gardening and your university accommodation are relevant to the question. However, the response addresses the claim that blocks are the “best way” only partly: it contrasts apartment living with detached houses but does not explain how those alternatives could provide enough homes in large cities, where space is limited. Some points, such as the claim that restrictions apply in all large buildings, are also asserted rather than supported. Develop the urban housing comparison more directly and qualify broad claims.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. Signposting such as “Firstly,” “In contrast” and “In conclusion” makes the main direction easy to follow. Some connections are nevertheless mechanical, and the first body paragraph shifts from the benefits of apartment blocks to personal freedoms without fully explaining the relationship between these points. The conclusion repeats the position but does not draw together the comparison or address the city-wide housing problem. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as in “This rule” and “that,” whose precise referents depend on the reader’s inference. Use transitions that show the logic between claims, and make each paragraph’s central point and supporting examples more tightly connected.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “adequate homes,” “designated areas,” “peace of mind” and “diversity.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “accommodation of a large number of people” and “isolated house.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise, including “stand in contrast to this statement,” “a freedom of doing things according to its taste,” and “the life is less mechanical.” Spelling errors such as “accomodation,” “seperate” and “accesible” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and precise terms—for example, distinguish between apartment residents’ privacy and their freedom to personalise a home—and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional phrasing (“if we consider…”) and a relative clause (“which is the major problem of large cities”). Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely obscure your meaning. Some grammatical problems persist, however: “any apartment owner does not have a freedom” has an awkward negative construction and article use; “the peace of mind worth much more” lacks subject–verb agreement; and “one of such example” has number and determiner errors. There are also issues with possessives and pronouns in “according to its taste.” To improve, check agreement, articles, singular/plural forms and pronoun reference, then revise longer sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
