Student answer (Band 5.0)

A number of people state that the best approach to provide homes in metropolitan cities is to build tall apartment buildings. However this subject requires further analysis.

Some people believe that providing tall appartment buildings in large cities is the best possible approach for people to live in. There are some reasons that supports these ideas firstly when there is more population then more space is requiref for the people to live but citites which are overpopulated does not have much space for too many people to live in short heighted buildings where only one or two families can live. Presently larger cities like Dubai and Newyork are more keen to build tall building so the people can live in comfort, without ever worrying about where they would go if no space would be left in town.

However some people believe that idea of building taller buildings should be discontinued the reason is that people assume it is risky to live at the height of more than 4 or 5 stories. Moreover it makes them feel tired of walking up the stairs even though there are elevators installed but there are people who are scared of elevators because of hearing of incidents. These thoughts can not be overlooked as well. As we know recently in India 30 stories tall building was collapsed due to an earth quake which was a natural disaster but many were injured or dead.

I strongly believe that government should pay attention towards making resources for better living. But they should also solve the problems of the people who are scared of living in taller buildings as everyones opinion has an equal valuation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address the topic by presenting reasons for and against tall apartment blocks, then state that governments should provide housing while addressing residents’ concerns. This gives the response a relevant central position. However, the position is not fully clear: the opening says the issue needs analysis, and the conclusion does not directly say how far you agree that tall blocks are the best solution. The supporting ideas are also limited or under-developed. For example, the space argument is relevant, but the Dubai and New York reference is asserted rather than explained; the earthquake example raises a safety concern but does not establish how common or decisive this risk is. State your degree of agreement clearly and develop each main reason with explanation or a specific, relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting tall buildings, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. The shift signalled by “However” helps readers follow the change in viewpoint, and the ideas generally remain connected to the topic. Progression is less clear within paragraphs, though. The first supporting paragraph combines population growth, limited space, and city examples without clearly separating the explanation from the evidence. Linking is also sometimes mechanical, as in “There are some reasons… firstly” and the repeated “Some people believe.” The conclusion introduces a general recommendation rather than clearly resolving the comparison. Use topic sentences to establish each paragraph’s purpose, then connect each example explicitly to your argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “overpopulated,” “natural disaster,” “resources,” and “elevators,” and the reader can generally understand your intended meaning. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, such as “tall building,” “people to live,” and “better living.” Some word choices and collocations make the argument less natural, for example “short heighted buildings” and “equal valuation.” Spelling errors such as “appartment,” “citites,” and “Newyork” are also noticeable and reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of expressions for housing density, safety, and residents’ preferences, and check spelling and collocations during revision. The suggestions below offer practical alternatives drawn from your response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “even though” and a reason clause introduced by “because.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and frequent errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries sometimes make the reader work to understand the point. For example, “There are some reasons that supports these ideas” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “when there is more population then more space is requiref” has an inaccurate verb form and an awkward clause structure. The opening also runs “buildings. However” together, and the conclusion contains a sentence fragment-like construction after “living.” Practise building accurate sentences around one main idea, then check agreement, tense, articles, and punctuation.
