Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is increasingly argued that demand for housing is increasing rapidly in large cities due to population growth and migration. Some people believed that constructing tall apartment buildings is the best solution to this problem. While i acknowledge that i largely agree with this view because high rise buildings can accommodate more people and save land, although other housing option are also important.

To begin with, there are several compelling reasons why build a tall apartment blocks is that they can provide accommodation for a large number of people in limited area.In big cities, land is expensive and difficult to find, so constructing individual houses for every family is not practical.high-rise buildings allow hundreds of families to live in the same area. For example, in cities such as mumbai, many pepole live in apartment buildings because there is limited space available for residential devlopment.Furthermore, apartments can built near workplaces, school, hospitals and public transport ,which makes daily life more convenient and reduces commuting time.

However, i believe that relying entirely on tall buildings is not the perfect solution.Living in high-rise apartment can sometimes create problems, such as overcrowding, noise and a lack of privacy. Moreover, if buildings are poorly designed ,residents may face difficulties with elevators, parking facilities and emergency exits. Therefore, government should also consider other housing option, such as affordable houses on the outskirts of cities and the development of smaller town. These measures could reduce pressure on major cities and provide people with more choices according to their needs and budgets.

In conclusion, i largely agree that constructing tall apartment blocks is an effective way to provide sufficient housing in large cities because it saves land and accomodates more.Nevertheless, government should combine the approach with affordable housing projects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you largely agree that tall apartment blocks are an effective response, while recognising that they should not be the only option. You address both sides of the question and give relevant reasons, including efficient land use, proximity to services, and possible problems such as noise and limited privacy. The Mumbai example helps illustrate the pressure on urban space. Some points, however, are asserted rather than fully developed: for instance, the drawbacks of high-rise living are listed without explaining their wider effects, and the alternatives on city outskirts are not explored in detail. To strengthen the response, extend one or two key points with a clearer explanation or specific example, while maintaining your balanced position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs present supporting reasons and limitations, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. The organisation is coherent, though some connections feel formulaic, and punctuation spacing sometimes makes sentence boundaries less clear. For example, the opening runs several sentences together without spaces after full stops, and the first body paragraph moves from land scarcity to nearby services quite quickly. Use punctuation consistently and add brief transitions that explain how each point relates to your main argument. This would make the flow more flexible and less dependent on standard signposting.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “population growth,” “limited space,” “residential development,” “overcrowding,” and “affordable housing.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and some phrases are appropriately specific to urban planning. However, there are several spelling errors and imprecise or awkward combinations, such as “pepole,” “devlopment,” “accomodates,” and “housing option.” Some wording is also repetitive, particularly “tall apartment buildings” and “housing.” Aim to check spelling carefully and choose more precise collocations; for example, describe housing as “accommodating a large population” rather than simply “accommodates more.” Greater accuracy and variety would make the vocabulary more flexible and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “While I acknowledge…” and a conditional-style explanation of the benefits of high-rise buildings. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “why build a tall apartment blocks is” instead of a correctly formed clause, “apartments can built” instead of “can be built,” and “government should” where an article or plural form is needed. The opening sentence also combines “while” and “although” awkwardly, and several sentences need clearer punctuation. Review verb patterns after modal verbs, subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control without requiring more complicated ideas.
