Student answer (Band 6.0)

People move to big cities for a better future with the hopes of getting better oppurtunities for jobs and higher education. As a result, the cities face a massive drawback which is overpopulation. Some people propose a solution in the form of building tall apartment blocks to solve this issue. I wholeheartedly agree with this statement.

This is the only logical solution for such a problem. More accomodations are made on relatively small plots. I have seen it happen in my own city which is Lahore. Lahore is the capital of Punjab. People move to Lahore all the time from small cities as well as villages. Some people do it so that they would get better job oppurtunities, while others do it so that they would get access to other facilities like biggest hospitals in Pakistan, like Services Hospital Lahore. As a result, the city got crowded and rent rates went through the roof. To solve this issue, many tall apartment buildings were constructed to accomodate more people. As a fact of matter, my own brother lives on 6th floor of an apartment block on the Davis Road. The rent has become managable for middle and lower class people due to this.

This way, we can also preserve more agricultural land and forests as building single story houses will occupy more land and provide less accomodation.

To put in a nutshell, I believe building aparment complexes is the wisest way to use the resources to provide more homes while using as less space as we can.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you “wholeheartedly agree,” and the response stays focused on whether tall apartment blocks can provide homes in large cities. The Lahore example gives relevant support, including migration for work and services, rising rents, and your brother’s experience of apartment living. You also add a distinct reason about preserving agricultural land and forests. These points address the task and show some development, but the land-preservation argument is only briefly stated, and the claim that this is “the only logical solution” is stronger than the evidence provided. To develop the response further, explain why apartment blocks are preferable to other approaches and extend the environmental point with a specific consequence or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the problem and your position, gives a local example, adds an environmental reason, and concludes. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “As a result” and “To solve this issue” make some relationships clear. However, the progression within the main example is occasionally abrupt: the move from migration to hospital access, then rent, and then construction could be linked more explicitly. The final environmental point is also short and feels somewhat detached from the Lahore discussion. Use a wider range of natural transitions and clearer references between ideas, while ensuring each paragraph develops one main reason before moving on.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “overpopulation,” “agricultural land,” “apartment buildings,” and “rent rates,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, such as “went through the roof.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural word combinations limit the range and control: “oppurtunities,” “accomodations,” and “managable” are misspelled, while “biggest hospitals” and “as less space as we can” are not natural choices in context. Some repetition of “people” and “city” also reduces flexibility. Aim for accurate spelling and more precise collocations, such as “access to major hospitals” and “use as little land as possible.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the opening sentence with “for a better future” and the clause beginning “while others do it so that…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors do not generally obstruct understanding. Some grammatical patterns are less controlled, however. For example, “the city got crowded” shifts into the past despite the general discussion, and “my own brother lives on 6th floor” is missing an article before “6th floor.” The construction “as building single story houses will occupy more land” is also awkwardly formed. Review tense consistency, articles, and sentence construction, and proofread punctuation and phrasing to make complex sentences more consistently accurate.
