IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People often debate about if we should build tall apartments in large cities, I agree with this statement and believe this is the most suitable solution to provide housing in large cities with growing populations.

Those who are in favour of building tall apartments argue that cities usually have high population density and limited land so to provide a large number of people enough homes we have to build vertically to house hundreds of families in limited amount of land, we can see great examples such as china. Secondly, families closer to the cities living in high rise buildings have a shorter commute time as well to places such as offices, schools and hospitals which reduces the use of cars and other forms of personal transport which better for the environment as fuel consumption is reduced.

Those who are not in favour argue that they are more expensive to construct and maintain, poorly planned tall apartments result in overcrowding and weak community life, and lack of parking space. Some families with children prefer houses with gardens or open areas where children can freely play which is important for the development of children.

In conclusion, although tall apartments have some drawbacks and should be built with careful planning and good public transport infrastructure. I believe it remains the most cost effective solution for the average family who wants affordable housing and utilites such as water, gas and electricity in the city near offices, schools and hospitals while using limited land.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that tall apartments are the most suitable solution, and the conclusion restates this view while acknowledging drawbacks. You give relevant reasons, including limited urban land, shorter commutes, and the needs of families who prefer gardens. However, these points are not developed equally. The reference to China is too general to demonstrate how high-rise housing works, and the environmental benefit is asserted rather than explained in detail. The counterarguments are also listed more than explored. The response is one word below the required minimum, so it does not meet the task’s length requirement. Develop one or two examples further and explain why the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting advantages, a paragraph outlining concerns, and a conclusion. This makes the overall line of argument easy to follow. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The second body paragraph begins “Those who are not in favour argue,” but the essay does not clearly distinguish this opposing view from your own response to it. The first body paragraph also contains several ideas in one long sentence, making the relationships between limited land, housing supply, and the China example harder to follow. Use clearer sentence boundaries and add a brief response to the counterarguments before concluding. More precise referencing would also help readers see how each point supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “population density,” “high rise buildings,” “overcrowding,” “community life,” and “public transport infrastructure.” These terms help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning remains clear. There are, however, some imprecise or awkward choices: “families closer to the cities living in high rise buildings” is difficult to interpret, while “cost effective solution” and “limited amount of land” could be expressed more naturally and precisely. “Utilites” is also misspelled, and “china” needs capitalization. Aim for accurate collocations and consistent formal style; for example, describe residents as living “closer to workplaces and services” rather than using the unclear phrase about families being closer to cities.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including a conditional-style explanation of how building vertically can house many families and a relative clause in “which is important for the development of children.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. The opening joins two independent clauses with a comma: “People often debate about if we should build tall apartments in large cities, I agree…” The first body paragraph is also a run-on sentence, and “which better for the environment” is missing a verb (“which is better”). Other issues include “limited amount of land,” which needs an article, and the conclusion’s “although” clause is not completed as a full sentence. Break up long sentences and check clause structure, articles, and punctuation.
