Student answer (Band 6.0)

WITH THE URBAN ADVANCEMENT, GOVERNMENT BODIES ARE OFFERING MORE SOLUTIONS TO PROVIDE ENOUGH HOMES IN LARGE CITIES. ONE OF THE SOLUTIONS IS THE CONSTRUCTION OF TALL APARTMENTS AND GIVING PEOPLE BLOCKS INSIDE THOSE APARTMENT TO RESIDE. I COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH THIS SOLUTION BECAUSE LIVING IN TALL APARTMENTS BRINGS LESS EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT AND DIFFICULT SAFETY EVACUATIONS IN RED ZONE AREAS.

PEOPLE LIVING IN BLOCK IN TALL BUILDINGS EXPERIENCE LEAST TO NO SUNLIGHT AT ALL. MOST OF THE BUILDINGS COVER EACH OTHER, WHICH CAN BE QUITE BENEFICIAL IN SUMMER, BUT LESS SUNLIGHT AFFECTS OUR RATIONAL THINKING AND HEALTH. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT SUNLIGHT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR VITAMIN D PRODUCTION IN OUR BODY WHICH PRODUCES DOPAMINE AND REDUCES STRESS. NOT ENOUGH EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT AFFECTS PLANT GROWTH IN A HOME. IF GOVERNMENT CAN SOLVE THESE PROBLEM BY CONSTRUCTING TALL BUILDINGS FACING THE SUN, THEN PEOPLE CAN RESIDE IN THOSE BUILDINGS WITHOUT MUCH DIFFICULTIES.

ANOTHER REASON WHY I OPPOSE LIVING IN TALL BUILDINGS IS BECAUSE THESE BUILDINGS REQUIRE HIGH LEVEL OF MAINTENANCE BEFORE AND AFTER CATASTROPHIC DISASTERS. BEFORE DISASTERS LIKE EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE, PEOPLE LIVING IN THESE BUILDINGS HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT HOW TO ESCAPE AND EXIT THE BUILDING DURING CATASTROPHIC MOMENTS. THERE ARE NO EDUCATIONAL SIGNS ACROSS THE WALLS AND EXIT DOORS. FOR INSTANCE, IN MY COUNTRY EVERY YEAR PEOPLE DIE BECAUSE OF FIRE BREAK OUTS IN THESE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS AND PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO ESCAPE. AFTER DISASTERS LIKE EARTHQUAKE, BECAUSE OF HEAVY CONSTRUCTION REMAINS AND STONES, ALOT OF LIVES ARE IN DANGER. IF GOVERNMENT CARRY DRILLS TO EDUCATE PEOPE AND STUDENTS IN SCHOOL, THEN IT GETS CONVENIENT TO LIVE IN RESIDENTIAL APARTMENTS.

IN MY OPINION, IF GOVERNMENT IS BUILDING RESIDENTIAL APARTMENTS, THEN PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES SHOULD BE TAKEN IN TIME OF DISASTERS. BUILDINGS SHOULD BE BUILT WITH OPEN SPACE AND FACE TOWARDS SUN. GREEN ROOFS SHOULD BE CREATED TO MAKE THEM ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you disagree with relying on tall apartment blocks, and you give relevant reasons concerning sunlight and disaster safety. The examples about vitamin D and fires in your country help connect the argument to real effects. However, the response does not fully sustain its stated opposition. You acknowledge that buildings facing the sun and government safety drills could address the problems, then conclude by recommending apartments with open space and green roofs. This makes your final position less decisive, and the second body paragraph focuses more on poor preparation and maintenance than on why tall blocks are not the best way to provide homes. Develop the comparison with alternatives, such as lower-density housing or improved transport to outer areas, and explain why these would be preferable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs with separate concerns, and a concluding paragraph. The progression from sunlight to disaster safety is easy to follow, and phrases such as “Another reason” signal the shift between points. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repeated “If government…” clauses, and the final paragraph introduces recommendations without clearly resolving your disagreement. Some references are also unclear: “these problem” does not specify which issue is meant, while “these buildings” can refer broadly to apartments or specifically to tall blocks. Use more varied transitions and make each paragraph’s main claim explicit. A conclusion that directly restates your position and synthesises the two reasons would create a stronger overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “sunlight,” “vitamin D production,” “catastrophic disasters,” “evacuations,” and “green roofs.” These choices make the subject clear, and some less common terms show an attempt to discuss urban housing and safety precisely. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “giving people blocks inside those apartment,” “rational thinking,” and “construction remains.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “alot,” “PEOPE,” and “fire break outs,” which reduce the overall control of vocabulary. Aim for natural combinations such as “provide residents with apartments,” “debris,” and “fire outbreaks,” and check spelling and word forms carefully. This would make your meaning more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If government can solve these problem…” and longer explanations using “which” and “because.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include missing or incorrect articles and plurals in “these problem” and “in tall apartments,” subject–verb agreement in “If government carry drills,” and awkward sentence construction in “people have no idea about how to escape.” Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent, with the response written entirely in capitals and some sentences containing unnecessary commas. Practise accurate article use, plural agreement, and conditional verb forms, then proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation. Greater control of these patterns would make the complex ideas easier to read.
