Student answer (Band 6.0)

The solution to housing crisis in metropolitan lies in huge apartment blocks. I agree with this statement as large cities have limited space and only proper planning can make them provide enough homes for the public.

Metropolitan cities need to have boundary, they can't be just evergrown due to the population. To maintain these boundaries we need to optimize the space used by houses to provide enough space for residents of the city to live. An apartment block can support around ten times more number of residents than a single house in that same area size, cause of the fact that we can have tens to hundreds of floors now depending on strong foundation. For example, an apartment of 20 floors can host 20 families each floor in the same area size as of a single storey house in that area.

Moreover, with these huge cities we need planned apartment blocks so that the residents don't just feel trapped in these cement blocks. We need to offer gymnasiums, swimming pools and children play grounds with proper car parking. Only with these planned apartment blocks we can provide a solution to evergrowing demand of housing in metropolitan cities.

To conclude, I strongly support the fact that metropolitan cities need to have tall apartment blocks to provide solution to the housing crisis as they are more optimized and cover less area. Moreover, if they are planned carefully they can be a long term solution to the problem of enough homes in large cities

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that tall apartment blocks are the best way to address housing shortages in large cities. You give relevant reasons, especially limited urban space and the capacity of multi-storey buildings, and the example of a 20-floor block helps illustrate your point. You also recognise that facilities and careful planning affect residents’ quality of life. However, the comparison with a single house is asserted rather than fully explained, and the facilities point is not developed into a clear reason why this approach is best. To strengthen the response, explain the example more precisely and consider a limitation or alternative, then show why apartment blocks remain preferable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. The progression from limited land to efficient building, then to planning and amenities, is generally logical. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “To conclude” help signal these stages. At times, however, connections between ideas are abrupt or repetitive: the second body paragraph moves from large cities to residents feeling “trapped” without explaining the link, and “planned apartment blocks” is repeated several times. Some references, such as “they” in the final paragraph, could be made more precise. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each supporting detail explicitly to your argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “housing crisis,” “metropolitan cities,” “apartment blocks,” “population,” and “long-term solution,” so the main ideas are easy to follow. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “optimize the space” and “strong foundation.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, including “evergrown,” “provide enough space for residents … to live,” and “more number of residents.” “Metropolitan” is also used awkwardly as a noun in the opening. These choices limit the naturalness and precision of the vocabulary, even though the intended meaning is usually clear. Build a bank of accurate collocations for urban housing and check word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the conditional structure “if they are planned carefully” and the relative clause “which can support…” is not present, but you do attempt to explain causes and conditions in longer sentences. Most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction: “The solution to housing crisis” needs an article, while “cities need to have boundary” requires a plural or a different construction. The sentence beginning “An apartment block can support…” also becomes difficult to control when several explanations are added. Aim for more consistently accurate sentence patterns, and punctuate longer sentences carefully; shorter, well-controlled sentences can help clarify your reasoning.
