IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The most convenient way to cater to a large number of inhabitants in large cities is by building high rise apartment buildings.
By building high rise residential apartments more people can be facilitated and less space would be consumed.I quite agree with this statement as a high rise apartment provides a vertical structure where houses are stacked onto one another, the space on ground decrease and it provides a smart approach in managing the urban landscape of the city.Whereas, the parking can be built underground to manage the huge number of cars. This way the issues of ousing can be managed.
Also, the residents are not just confined to their own houses but they also have access to mix-used spaces specifically for the users of that building where people can socialize with other tenats and even become good friends.A high rise building can solve alot of problems not just related to the infrastructure but also social issues of people too.
Although, high rise buildings can add to the carbon footprint by producing excess gases by use of the mechanical structures,it can also block the amout of light and air reaching the low rise buildings and houses. So,it can cause a negative impact on the residents of the soceity living in their own homes.
In conclusion,i would like to say that high rise buildings do have pros and cons but the pros outweigh the cons so that's why they should be built as they would cater to alot of social and urban issues arising in large cities which are unable to manage their overgrowing population.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you agree that high-rise apartments are an effective response to housing pressure, and you also acknowledge disadvantages. Relevant points include using less ground space, providing underground parking, and creating shared social areas. However, some ideas are asserted rather than explained. For example, the claim that shared spaces help residents “become good friends” would be stronger with a specific example or explanation of how this benefits city life. The environmental and light-related drawbacks are introduced, but their significance is not fully weighed against the advantages. To develop the response further, explain why building upward is the best approach compared with alternatives, and support key claims with a concrete example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, supporting points, a paragraph on drawbacks, and a conclusion that restates your view. The progression from space efficiency to social benefits and then disadvantages is generally logical. However, connections between ideas are sometimes mechanical or unclear. The opening of the second paragraph, “Also,” adds a point, while “Although” introduces a contrast, but the relationship between some sentences within paragraphs could be made more explicit. The long first body paragraph combines several claims, making its progression harder to follow. Use clearer paragraphing to separate the space and parking argument from the social argument, and make references such as “This way” more precise so readers can easily identify the point being summarised.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “high rise,” “vertical structure,” “urban landscape,” “carbon footprint,” and “socialize.” These choices show an attempt to discuss housing and city planning beyond basic terms. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “people can be facilitated,” “the space on ground decrease,” and “mix-used spaces.” Spelling and word-form slips, including “ousing,” “tenats,” “alot,” and “soceity,” also reduce precision. Some expressions are repeated, particularly “high rise” and “issues.” Aim for accurate collocations and more specific vocabulary, such as describing how apartments “accommodate residents” or how shared facilities “encourage interaction.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure (“By building… more people can…”) and a concession beginning “Although.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems make the writing less controlled. For example, “the space on ground decrease” has an agreement problem, and “a high rise apartment provides… where houses are stacked onto one another, the space…” joins clauses incorrectly. Several sentences run together without spaces after full stops or commas, and the conclusion begins “i” rather than “I.” Practise separating independent clauses and checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make your reasoning easier to follow.
