Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Building tall apartment blocks is the best solution to provide enough homes in the large cities. I completely agree with this statement.

One reason is for me to agree is that to fulfill this housing demand, the other solution to this problem is deforestration. Cutting the trees in the jungle and make space for the people to build homes for themselves, which is the most unnatural way which again causes numerous problems for humans and other living creatures too. The idea for tall apartment blocks is reliable because then we don't have to cut trees or mountains to make space for us instead we will build our homes vertically.

The other reason is that while building tall apartments, we would'nt create mess of buildings everywhere, no free space for grounds, parks, swimming pools etc. Moreover , it would be a facility for students or work persons if their residence is in the city and near to their offices or schools, their commuting time and effort would be saved.

Although there are some drawbacks of this idea too. For example there are some families or people who want that their house should be spacious and open. They need a peaceful environment for them. Also, another negative point to this idea is that developing the taller buildings need more cost and efforts. These developements need more instruments and machinery.

Inspite of these drawbacks about tall appartment blocks, I completely agree with the idea to develop them because in my opinion, there are more benefits of it than disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you completely agree that tall apartment blocks are the best solution. You give relevant reasons, including avoiding the loss of natural areas, preserving space for parks and facilities, and reducing commuting time. You also acknowledge drawbacks such as cost and the preference some families have for spacious homes, so the response addresses both sides of the question. To strengthen the argument further, develop the supporting points with more precise explanation or an example. For instance, the claim that building vertically avoids cutting trees or mountains is broad, and the benefits of shorter commutes could be linked more explicitly to city housing demand. Some ideas are therefore less fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs supporting your view, a paragraph recognising drawbacks, and a concluding restatement. The progression from environmental impact to urban amenities and then counterarguments is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “One reason,” “Moreover,” and “Although” help signal the relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical, and the opening of the first body paragraph—“One reason is for me to agree”—is awkward and makes the line of reasoning less smooth. The sentence beginning “Cutting the trees…” is also not fully connected grammatically to the preceding point. Use clearer topic sentences and vary transitions so that links feel natural rather than formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main points, including “housing demand,” “commuting time,” “peaceful environment,” and “machinery.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “build vertically” and “deforestation.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision. For example, “make space for the people to build homes” and “create mess of buildings everywhere” are not natural expressions in this context. Spelling and word-form errors such as “deforestration,” “developements,” and “appartment” also reduce control. Aim to learn common collocations for urban planning and housing, and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including a concession introduced by “Although” and a conditional idea about residents living near work or school. The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some sentence structures are faulty or incomplete. For example, “One reason is for me to agree is that…” has an incorrect construction, while “Cutting the trees in the jungle and make space…” is a fragment with mismatched verb forms. There are also errors in forms such as “we would'nt create” and “developing the taller buildings need.” Work on building complete clauses, keeping verb forms consistent, and checking subject–verb agreement and punctuation. More accurate complex sentences would make your reasoning clearer.
