Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that, for providing the sufficient housing tall buildings should be constructed in cities. Even though it might be a wonderful idea, I still completely disagree with this statement.

I agree that people should get the equal chance for moving into cities for their growth. However I oppose for the buiding tall apartment because every city has their own cultural value. I believe that once people starts coming from outside, the city gets crowded and loses its cultural value.

For example, the city where I live called Pune, which is in Maharashtra state has its own unique culture like it is famous for heritage living sites such as wadas, and big bungalows with spacious area, where people can plant their plants and trees.

The next point is much more crucial than we realise. If we start building tall building aprtments it will block the natural sunlight which is not only important for getting the necessary nutrients like Vitamin D but it also gives positive energy which is very important in the current world.

For example, first Pune had so many bungalows which had spacious garden in front of their house where people could enjoy their time in the morning while drinking tea and chatting with each other but since the new tall buildings started built by developers it keeps blocking the sunlight and there are no space left for house attached garden.

So, even if building tall apartments might be the best way to provide home for all I honestly believe that tall building should not be built.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely disagree with relying on tall apartment blocks, and the examples about Pune’s heritage homes and gardens support that view. You also give two relevant reasons—preserving local character and protecting access to sunlight—so the response addresses the question. However, the first reason is not fully explained: the claim that newcomers make a city lose its culture is asserted rather than showing how apartment construction causes this. The sunlight point is more developed, but the essay does not compare high-rise housing with other ways to provide enough homes, such as renovating existing buildings or expanding housing in less crowded areas. Develop the reasoning behind each point and connect it more directly to the question of housing supply.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from your position to two supporting points and then a conclusion. The examples are placed near the ideas they illustrate, which helps the reader follow the argument. Basic linking phrases such as “However,” “For example,” and “So” make relationships between points visible. At times, though, the progression is mechanical, with both body paragraphs relying on a point followed by an example without further explanation. Some references are also unclear, particularly “it” in “it keeps blocking the sunlight,” where the reader must infer that this refers to the new buildings. Use clearer referencing and add sentences that explain how each example supports your argument; this would make the development more continuous and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to housing and urban life, including “cultural value,” “heritage,” “spacious,” “natural sunlight,” and “developers.” These choices help communicate your examples, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “providing the sufficient housing,” “heritage living sites,” and “house attached garden.” There are also spelling errors, including “buiding” and “aprtments,” which reduce the accuracy of the writing. Aim for more natural phrases and a wider range of precise terms—for example, describe “heritage buildings” or “private gardens,” and use “housing provision” when discussing the broader issue. Proofreading spelling and collocations will make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Even though it might be a wonderful idea” and a relative clause in the example about Pune. The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and verb forms. For instance, “every city has their own” has a pronoun-agreement problem, while “once people starts coming” needs a plural verb. The sentence beginning “For example, the city where I live called Pune” is also missing a finite verb in its main clause. In “there are no space left,” the noun and verb pattern do not agree. Review these patterns and punctuate long sentences carefully; more consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
