Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's globalized world where there is a housing crisis in large cities, tall apartment buildings have emerged as a potential solution to the crisis. I personally agree with this statement. This essay will discuss overcrowding and security as the reasons in support of building tall apartment blocks.

Overcrowding is one of the major reasons why building tall apartment blocks is necessary. Metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Karachi had a major housing crisis due to overcrowding. These cities were not designed for such a large population. Governments and municipal coorporations decided to build tall apartment buildings in these cities. As a result, the problem of housing crisis was managed. One huge apartment building can accomodate thousands of families. Building individual homes for each family is not a economically feasible option. Each city has a limited area of land and that land has to be distributed amongst schools, hospitals and markets, so it is not feasible to allocate a seperate piece of land to each family.

More than providing enough homes, making residential zone safe and secure should be the utmost priorty. Providing security to tall apartment blocks is a much more easier task. Centralized systems like CCTV can be integrated in the whole building. Moreover, instead of each home paying for its own security, all the apartments in the building can contribute and arrange for security of the building. In cities like Karachi where security is a big concern, residential buildings are a much safer option. From a government perspective, it is much easier to monitor a residential building than individual houses.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that for providing enough and suitable homes, tall apartment blocks should be made as they are a viable solution to overcrowded cities and a secure option.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I personally agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the proposal by explaining how high-rise housing can accommodate many families on limited urban land, and you support this with examples of Mumbai and Karachi. The security argument adds a second relevant reason, including shared CCTV and monitoring. These points are extended with explanation, which suits this level of response. However, the discussion sometimes generalises: for example, you state that the housing crisis in these cities “was managed” without showing how effective the buildings were or acknowledging possible limits. The security point is relevant but less directly connected to providing enough homes. Develop the evidence and explain more explicitly why high-rise construction is the best option compared with alternatives.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-part structure: an introduction, two focused body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas progress logically from land scarcity and overcrowding to security, and linking phrases such as “As a result,” “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. Each body paragraph has a recognisable central focus, and the conclusion returns to your position. Cohesion is generally effective, though some transitions feel formulaic, particularly the repeated use of “Moreover” and “As a result.” The opening of the second body paragraph (“More than providing enough homes”) also shifts to security without clearly explaining how this supports the main claim. Use more precise links between the reasons and the question, and vary referencing so that repeated phrases such as “tall apartment buildings” do not make the flow feel mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “housing crisis,” “overcrowding,” “municipal corporations,” “centralized systems” and “residential zone.” These choices make the subject clear, and the meaning remains understandable throughout. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “economically feasible” and “utmost priority.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “a much more easier task” is not idiomatic, and “suitable homes” is vague in the conclusion. Spelling errors such as “coorporations,” “accomodate,” “seperate” and “priorty” also limit accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and proofread spelling; for instance, describe the land as “allocated” and the buildings as “high-density housing.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause (“where there is a housing crisis”) and a reason clause (“as they are a viable solution”). Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the paragraph-level structure is controlled. Some grammatical errors remain, including the double comparative in “a much more easier task” and the article error in “not a economically feasible option.” The sentence beginning “Each city has a limited area of land” is long and joins several ideas; clearer clause boundaries would improve control. There is also a tense inconsistency in “cities like Mumbai and Karachi had a major housing crisis” when discussing a continuing situation. These issues rarely obstruct understanding, but more consistent article use, comparison forms and tense choices would strengthen accuracy.
