Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary era, the trends of skyscraper buildings is increasing rapidly in a metropolitan areas. I believe that the number of residents in urban areas rapidly increasing. I strongly agree to built high rise apartments in big cities to accomodate a large number of residents in single building to save the land for agricultural purpose.

With the tremendous growth and development of tall apartment in urban areas, accomodate the large number of residents in high-rise building in a metropoliton area. It is one of the best way to save land for the agricultural purpose and reduce the rate of cutting forest to construct new housing society on the the large area. Moreover, it is cheap to build tall building as compared to single house unit because the supply of water and other resources are less as compared to other. For instance the Lahore and Karachi spread drastically on the large area in last decade. Furthermore, vertical housing is sheap as compared to horizontal housing therefore the government should promote the skyscraper building.

To begin with, there are some drawbacks of high-rise building such as there are no social connection between the people as they spend most of the time inside their houses. In addition, the open area is less, therefore no outdoor activities done in this area. Furthermore, if there is any blockage happen in single unit it can effect the whole building.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that constructing high-rise apartment blocks is the most effective solution to the husing shortage in large cities. It is not only accomodate more people on the less land , but also preserve valuable agricultural land and provides affordable housing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you strongly support tall apartment blocks as a response to housing shortages. You address the main issue and give relevant reasons, including using less land, protecting agricultural areas, and providing more affordable housing. The comparison with Lahore and Karachi also begins to connect the argument to real urban growth. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: the claims that high-rise housing is cheaper and reduces forest loss are asserted rather than explained or evidenced. You also mention drawbacks, but do not clarify whether they weaken your overall position or how they could be addressed. Developing these points and making the example more specific would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure, with an introduction, supporting paragraph, paragraph on drawbacks, and conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and several ideas are placed together without a clear explanation of their relationship. For example, the first body paragraph moves from land conservation to construction costs and then to city expansion without fully connecting these points. The sentence beginning “With the tremendous growth…” is also incomplete, which interrupts the flow. Use clearer topic sentences, develop one main point at a time, and make references such as “this area” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “high-rise apartments,” “metropolitan area,” “agricultural purpose,” and “vertical housing,” so the reader can follow the subject. There are also attempts to use less common expressions, such as “tremendous growth and development.” However, the range is not consistently controlled: phrases such as “the trends of skyscraper buildings” and “single house unit” are unnatural, while “cheap” and “large area” are repeated or imprecise. Spelling errors, including “accomodate,” “metropoliton,” “sheap,” and “husing,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and more precise wording, such as describing housing as “cost-effective” and land as “limited urban space.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a contrast introduced by “although”-type ideas in the drawbacks paragraph. However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make sentences difficult to process. For example, “the trends … is increasing” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “With the tremendous growth …, accomodate the large number…” is a sentence fragment. Other examples include “there are no social connection” and “it can effect the whole building,” which show problems with agreement and sentence construction. Articles, plurals, and verb forms also need attention. Practise checking each sentence for a complete subject and verb, then review agreement and article use.
