Student answer (Band 6.5)

With increasing population, many governments and countries are running out of their resources. One precious resource among these is land and houses in large developed cities. Many people believe that to accomodate constantly growing population, tall apartment buildings are the only solution. I largely agree to this solution due to better usage of the available land and sharing of the scarce available resources.

To begin with, many people are migrating towards the developed cities which contributes heavily along with child birth to increase the population in large cities. However, the available land for construction of the houses is limited and it ultimately results in increase in the price of the available plots, making it difficult for people to make their own home. To solve that problem, tall apartment buildings provide a number of homes on that same land by expanding the construction vertically rather than horizontal. On the same available piece of land, where two or three houses would be made, twenty apartments can be constructed which would accomodate greater number of families.

Another huge advantage of these apartment buildings is that many resources such as water and electricity is shared among the people and with proper management and control, the wastage of these valuable resources can be restricted. For example, the water in our apartment is served twice a day only, which resuts in less wastage like people washing their cars etc with it, also the water motor is shared resulting in less electricity consumption. Moreover, people living in the apartments are more socially connected because there are many families living within the same community and they interact with each other quite often, which in not the case with most of the people living in houses or banglows.

Hence, in view of all the points, I firmly believe that apartment buildings are the best way to provide residential areas in large cities because they manage the valuable resources effectively and also it provides the ultimate solution to utilize the available land.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you largely agree that tall apartment buildings are the best response to housing pressure in large cities. You support this with relevant points about using land vertically and managing shared resources, and the comparison between two or three houses and twenty apartments makes the land-use argument concrete. This meets the task well, while the clear stance and examples show some qualities of a stronger response. However, the resource-sharing point is less fully developed: the example about restricted water supply illustrates rationing, but does not clearly establish that apartment living itself reduces overall waste. The social-connection point is also introduced without explaining how it helps provide enough homes. Develop these links and acknowledge a limitation or alternative to make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present supporting reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Another huge advantage,” and “Hence” help readers follow the progression. The main ideas are generally grouped appropriately, and the land-use paragraph moves logically from migration and limited land to vertical construction. At times, however, connections are mechanical or unclear. The second body paragraph combines resource management with social connection, and the final point is not clearly tied back to the question of housing supply. Some references, such as “that problem” and “it,” could also be more precise. Give each paragraph a sharper central focus and use transitions that show the exact relationship between claims.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant expressions such as “available land,” “construction vertically,” “scarce resources,” and “socially connected.” These choices make the main argument understandable, and you attempt some less common vocabulary. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, which limits flexibility: “child birth” is not the natural expression for population growth, “served” is unclear for water supply, and “ultimate solution” overstates the claim. There are also spelling errors, including “accomodate,” “resuts,” and “banglows.” Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check spelling carefully. Replacing broad or awkward phrases with natural collocations will make your reasoning sound more controlled and academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “which contributes heavily…” and “where two or three houses would be made.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and the response shows an attempt to vary sentence structure. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “many resources such as water and electricity is shared,” the plural subject requires a plural verb; “it also provides” in the conclusion does not agree clearly with the plural subject “apartment buildings.” There are also awkward or incomplete constructions, such as “expanding the construction vertically rather than horizontal,” and the sentence beginning “For example, the water in our apartment…” joins several ideas without clear grammatical control. Review agreement, parallel forms, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
