Student answer (Band 6.0)
Whether the large buildings and apartment blocks can help the economy to tackle the problem of urban housing shortage, has sparked a hot debate. I firmly believe that the building up of tall buildings can add up to provide enough housing for people living in crowded cities.
The tall apartments buildings can provide space for housing without using extra land. This can be helpful by keeping the city structure same -not narrowing the road and streets. Moreover, when the flats are built on a building, it covers the upper space without engaging extra land. On the other hand, if tall buildings are not appreciated, the government and other developing authorities will utilize the parks and other entertainment spaces. As residents will have fewer space to enjoy with more crowed. It will leave the residents with other health problems like anxiety, depression and stress
If the living space in large cities is not upgraded by building the towers or tall buildings, the people will start urbanization of rural areas. This will lead to private societies and colonies over the rural and agricultural area which will ultimately affect the economy as well as the living standards of residents. For instance, when the area of private agriculture is converted into housing societies, the food will become scarce, leading to high demand and low supply. To cope with shortage of edibles, the government will start import. Thus, burdening the lower income group. Consequently, the prices will be higher than ever.
In a nutshell, I strongly accompanied by the stance that taller buildings and apartment schemes can help to provide required homes for city residents. Otherwise, if expansion is executed by building more homes on ground and rural places, other significant problems will come into being; the food shortage or the health-related problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you strongly support building upwards to address housing shortages. You give relevant reasons, including preserving parks and roads and avoiding the conversion of agricultural land, and the example linking lost farmland to food prices helps explain a wider consequence. This covers the task well, but the support is uneven: the point about health problems is asserted rather than explained, and the response does not fully compare tall blocks with other ways of providing homes or clarify why they are the best option. To strengthen the argument, develop each main reason with a clear causal explanation and a specific example, while acknowledging any limitation of high-rise housing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and the final paragraph restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” “For instance,” and “Consequently” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections are not fully logical or precise. “On the other hand” introduces a consequence of not building tall blocks rather than a contrasting viewpoint, and “As residents will have fewer space…” is left as a fragment, interrupting the flow. The conclusion also repeats the main claim without synthesising the two arguments. Use transitions that accurately show cause, contrast, or result, and connect each supporting sentence explicitly to its paragraph’s main point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “urban housing shortage,” “agricultural area,” “food shortage,” and “lower income group,” and you attempt less common terms such as “utilize” and “ultimately.” This gives you enough range to discuss the issue, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the meaning less clear. Examples include “tall apartments buildings,” “crowed,” “accompanied by the stance,” and “shortage of edibles.” There is also repetition of “tall buildings” and “housing.” Aim for precise, natural collocations and check word forms and spelling. For example, use “high-rise apartment blocks,” “crowded,” and “food shortages” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“If the living space… is not upgraded…”) and a result clause beginning “which will ultimately affect…”. These attempts show some range, and the main argument is generally understandable. However, errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation remain noticeable. The opening sentence has an unnecessary comma separating its subject from “has sparked”; “the city structure same” is missing a grammatical link; and “As residents will have fewer space to enjoy with more crowed” is an incomplete sentence. There are also agreement and number problems in phrases such as “the tall apartments buildings.” Review sentence boundaries and ensure each clause has a complete, correctly formed subject and verb. More accurate complex sentences would improve control.
