Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the best solution for providing sufficient housing in urban places is to construct high vertical apartment blocks. While it is true that it has certain drawbacks and not practical I completely agree with the view that it is the optimal way due to several compelling reasons. This essay will not only elaborate on my viewpoint but also provide relevant examples to support it.

To commence with, one of the significant reasons is that it takes minimal area but provides maximum capacity. This can be attributed with the fact that the remaining areas could be utilized for other development projects. In other words, it could be used for agricultureor schools and hospitals can be built. For instance, an area has been selected for accomodation and a vertical building is built leaving other lands vacant. In those land, agriculture can be done and employment rate can also increase. This clearly demonstrates that tall builldings can help to conserve lands and promote other developments, benefiting both the country and the citizens.

Moreover, another crucial factor to consider is that some countries geography does not allow horizontal buildings. Furthermore, tall buildings can also lower the fiscal budget for government. With the high crowd density in a same place, services like transportation, electricity, schools and hospital can be constructed in a single place rather than having them in several places. A particularly good example of this is Singapore's land geography, there horizontal buildings can't be built as it is not suitable. So, tall building is the most effective way of ensuring same amount accomodation provided by horizontal houses.

In conclusion, although some may argue that vertical buildings are not the best way for ensuring enough accomodation. I strongly believe that it is the most optimal solution at present because of the reasons discussed above. Therefore, I full agree with the perspective mentioned above.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you strongly support tall apartment blocks, and both body paragraphs give relevant reasons. You explain efficient land use and argue that concentrated populations can make public services less costly; the Singapore example also helps illustrate the geographical point. This addresses the task well, but the support is uneven. The agriculture and employment example is hypothetical and its link to housing provision is not fully explained, while the claim that Singapore cannot build horizontally is asserted rather than substantiated. The opening also briefly mentions drawbacks without identifying them. Develop each reason with a more precise explanation or credible example, and acknowledge the limits of high-rise housing to make the argument more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two reason-based body paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “To commence with,” “Moreover” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the central position remains consistent. However, some linking is mechanical, and a few connections between ideas are not fully clear. For example, the shift from unused land to agriculture and employment needs a more explicit explanation, and the sentence about services being built “in a single place” does not clearly show how this reduces costs. The example beginning “For instance” is also difficult to follow because its references to “an area” and “those land” are vague. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-appropriate vocabulary, including “sufficient housing,” “crowd density,” “fiscal budget” and “vertical apartment blocks,” and you attempt more formal phrasing. However, the range is not consistently controlled, and noticeable spelling and collocation errors weaken precision: “accomodation,” “builldings,” “agricultureor” and “same amount accomodation” are examples. Some expressions are also unnatural, such as “countries geography” and “remaining areas could be utilized for other development projects.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your main argument, but they make parts of it less fluent. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “a country’s geography,” “housing capacity” and “reduce infrastructure costs,” and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concessive opening (“While it is true…”) and a relative clause (“which is not suitable”). The main argument is generally understandable, but some sentence structures and punctuation are faulty. For example, “While it is true that it has certain drawbacks and not practical I completely agree” lacks a clear grammatical connection between the clauses, and “In conclusion, although some may argue… . I strongly believe…” leaves the concessive clause incomplete. There are also errors in agreement and articles, as in “some countries geography” and “in a same place.” Use a comma after introductory clauses, ensure each sentence has a complete main clause, and check subject–verb agreement and article use when revising.
